YouTube Music tests ‘Dynamic queue’ that changes as you listen

After rolling out support for Android 13’s redesigned media controls, YouTube Music this week is also testing a “Dynamic queue.”

Appearing in settings, “Dynamic queue” wil “Get queue and radio updates based on your listening behavior.” According to initial reports, YouTube Music will change the playback queue if you skip to a new track while still half-way through the current song. It’s not clear if this feature is enabled by default.
These live updates are an alternative to a user becoming dissatisfied with a current radio and selecting an entirely different song to generate another queue

So far, this Dynamic queue has mostly appeared for iOS users (under Playback & restrictions), which also have it enabled in the YouTube Music web client. It’s not widely rolled out yet and didn’t appear on several Android devices we checked.

YouTube rolls out experimental ‘pinch to zoom’ feature for Premium users

YouTube has a program that allows Premium subscribers to access brand new features that aren’t quite fully baked. Today, YouTube dropped a new one called “pinch to zoom” for viewers that allows you to zoom into a video on-screen, even in landscape mode.

YouTube Premium subscribers get a lot of little extra features like background play and downloaded videos built into the YouTube experience. With the ability to try different new experimental features, Premium users can discover new tools before anyone else.

Today, YouTube added its new pinch to zoom feature to the experimental features page. This is a little different than the feature long available to everyone that allows you to fill your screen in landscape mode. Rather than filling your screen, pinch to zoom allows you to use two fingers to zoom into the video player. Once zoomed in, you can move around and look at parts of the video closer. This feature looks to be made specifically for portrait mode viewing.

If you’re a Premium member, you can find the new feature in the YouTube app on Android; just tap your profile photo and then hit Your Premium benefits. From there, you can find the Try new features page and turn on YouTube’s pinch to zoom. It may take a while to kick in until you can give this new tool a shot.

YouTube Music will stop using precise location to power recommendations

One way YouTube Music offers recommendations is by knowing your precise location, but that’s going to stop next month.

YouTube Music has long used your precise location to power certain recommendations. For example, the app might offer “a Workout Essentials playlist at the gym, your Focus Supermix at work, or an Unwind playlist to relax at home.” Users had to first grant the app that location permission and opt-in to Google Location History.

That approach is going to stop on Monday, September 26, with YouTube Music removing “all precise location-based recommendations, location settings, and app permissions.” Additionally, it’s “deleting any YouTube Music data derived from your precise location.” “Privacy & location” appears toward the end of preferences, and Google has always offered a toggle to temporarily pause it.

Over the past year, we’ve found new ways to get you to the right music. For example, you can now find music for working out, focusing, and other activities within the activity bar at the top of Home. We think this is a better approach to help you soundtrack your day.

We will continue to personalize your music experience based on your approximate location (for example, recommending the top songs charts for your country or weather-related playlists based on the weather in your city). These features will not be impacted.

YouTube Premium subscribers can now test Google Meet live sharing

At the start of this month, Google Meet introduced live sharing that “allows all meeting participants to interact with the content that’s being shared,” and you’re now able to test it on YouTube.

If you’re a YouTube Premium subscriber on Android, tap your profile avatar in the top-right corner > Settings > Try new features. (You can also join on the web, though this is just an Android feature at the moment.) You’ll find a “Watch YouTube together with Google Meet” experiment, while “Pinch to zoom” is going away tomorrow.

This ability to co-watch videos was first announced for Samsung devices with Google Duo at the start of this year. Other capabilities include curating a playlist in Spotify, and playing games like Heads Up!, UNO! Mobile, or Kahoot!

Naturally, such a radical attempt to make users pay for YouTube sparked a hot discussion in the community, causing massive criticism. Team YouTube's official Twitter account has revealed that paid 4K streaming was an experiment, and the company has "fully turned it off." Now all users should be able to watch high-resolution videos on all platforms without subscribing to YouTube Premium.

YouTube Premium is a $12/mo service that removes all ads from YouTube and provides access to YouTube Music and YouTube Originals. The subscription is infamous for its continuous and explicitly annoying attempts to convert regular users to paid subscribers every time someone opens the YouTube app. Judging from the community reaction to Google's latest experiment, the company has crossed the line this time.

Google quietly increases prices of its YouTube Premium Individual and Family Plans

YouTube Premium provides ad-free access to content across its service but running it on your devices could prove a bit costly as the video-streaming service is increasing the prices of its family plan. The news comes just after the streaming giant ended its controversial experiment with Premium 4K playback.

Google says that it updates membership prices occasionally to keep up with market changes. As such, it decided to increase the family plan prices of YouTube Premium from $17.99 to $22.99 per month. The new prices include inflation and local tax changes and will support up to six accounts for a single subscription.
The change will be visible on the next billing cycle, starting on or after November 21, 2022.

The price of YouTube Premium for individual accounts have increased significantly (over three times the original price) in Argentina (from ARS 119.00 per month to ARS 389.00 per month) and almost double in Turkey (from TRY 16.99 per month to TRY 29.99 per month)

The ability to watch in 4K Ultra High Definition is the main feature with live and on-demand content labeled as such in the app. The following networks are supported: Discovery, ESPN, Fox Sports, FX, Nat Geo, NBC Sports, Tastemade, and MLB Network.

You also get the ability to download and watch DVR recordings offline on the mobile apps, as well as unlimited concurrent streams at home (on your local Wi-Fi network). By default, you can only use YouTube TV on up to three devices inside and outside your home.

YouTube TV 4K Plus costs $19.99 per month on top of the $64.99 Base Plan. Many found it quite expensive, and Google – at launch – let you pay $9.99/month for the first year.

Certain subscribers are being offered that $9.99 pricing for 24 months.

In our brief usage, it’s really quite good and deserves the “Your music tuner” description. The customization page will note when there are “No songs to play” if the filters you applied don’t mix well.

You can save a custom radio to your Library and it will also appear in the “Listen again” carousel. The generated cover art features three artist images, while you cannot change the station name, which is somewhat unwieldy.

Original 12/15/22: Still in testing as part of a limited rollout, some YouTube Music users today are seeing “Create a radio” in the main feed. Meant to “tune your music,” a grid of artists for you to select appears next in an experience similar to YouTube Music’s initial setup process. Multiple artists can be picked to influence the outcome.
