Google is breaking up its premium YouTube Red service into two new offerings: a YouTube Music streaming service, available either for free with ads or for $9.99 per month, and a YouTube Premium for original video content, costing $11.99 per month.

YouTube Music is Google’s most direct competitor to Spotify yet, coming with “a reimagined mobile app” and a new desktop player, both of them designed specifically for music.

In terms of pricing, YouTube Music will be a direct match to all the major music-streaming platforms already available, costing $9.99 for the premium version, which adds background listening, downloads, and an ad-free experience to the free option. Anyone who already has a Google Play Music subscription gets YouTube Music as part of that membership.

The $11.99 YouTube Premium gets you everything inside YouTube Music plus access to the YouTube Originals library of video content. Google promises it’ll expand the Originals selection with “more, bigger original series and movies,” including comedies, dramas, reality series, and action adventure shows from the UK, Germany, France, Mexico, and other countries. With YouTube Premium, you’ll be free of ads, able to play videos in the background, or download them for offline playback.

While both Spotify and Apple Music aim to intelligently learn from your listening habits to recommend songs you’ll also like, Google takes this a step further. YouTube Music will harness the smarts of Google Assistant to fuel its song recommendations. “The idea is that with the Google Assistant, Google’s smartphone app that uses artificial intelligence to help guide your life, subscribers to the new YouTube Music will find a service that makes smarter suggestions on what music to listen to,” USA Today explains.
The service aims to recommend songs based on things such as your location, the time of day, and your listening patterns—which means it could theoretically learn that you prefer lyric-less electronic at work but bouncy, upbeat pop music in the mornings at home and serve you the appropriate genres accordingly.

The major question left to answer is: Who exactly is this music service for? Counting its free live radio listeners, Apple Music boasts more than 50 million subscribers; Spotify is even bigger, with 75 million paying listeners and 170 million people using the service on a monthly basis.

Still, Google will have a tough time swaying those who already subscribe to competitors—once you’ve got your playlists set and music recommendations dialed in, there’s no real reason to switch services.

YouTube Music as a service has been around for about three years now, though it really only existed in earnest once the revamped version of the YouTube Music app and dedicated website, as we know it today, launched in May.

YouTube Music is so unfinished and lacking features that I question whether Google has any intentions of following through with its vision of replacing Google Play Music entirely.
Put simply, I can't believe Google thinks anyone will pay $10 per month for it when all signs point to Google itself not caring about YouTube Music's success.

But the fact that I can't use it either at home or in the car, despite using Google's own hardware and services in both, is baffling. The app and website aren't yet ready for prime time, and the half-baked integration with YouTube just gets in the way of both services.

YouTube is reportedly offering automatic downloads to its Premium subscribers. The opt-in feature should make it easier to watch content offline. As Android Police notes, some Premium subscribers now see a pop-up banner offering to automatically download favorite topics.
In the "Downloads" section, users can pick channels and subjects to save for offline viewing, and each card indicates how long the videos are, so you have an idea of what you're saving.

Just last month, YouTube made a similar change to YouTube Music. If you're a YouTube Music Premium subscriber, you can opt to have the app automatically download up to 500 of your favorite songs, so you can listen to them even when service is spotty. To save on data, the downloads take place only while your device is connected to Wi-Fi and happen overnight.

Revealed over on Twitter, YouTube is giving students 3-months to give either service a shot. That’s a whole lot longer than the 1-month trials that YouTube Premium and YouTube Music typically offer. As per usual, these trials will automatically start charging users as soon as the trial expires unless they cancel.

Importantly, though, YouTube Music and YouTube Premium offer these student plans at a heavy discount as was revealed last year. Prices are cut by 50% making YouTube Music Premium $4.99 per month and YouTube Premium just $6.99 per month. The former of those only offers the music service, though, so YouTube Premium is probably the better offer since you’re getting both music and ad-free YouTube videos.

Continuing its expansion across the globe, YouTube's paid Premium membership is making its way to my neck of the woods.
The service is now available in eight new countries in the Middle East, most of which are in the GCC area. If you live around here, you probably didn't expect Premium to come to us this "soon" after its international launch, so the news is a nice late-night surprise.

With these fast additions, YouTube Music has now reached over 70 countries, surpassing Play Music's availability even though the latter was launched eight years earlier. That bodes well for a more global expansion of YouTube Music.

If you're considering the subscription, you should know that the benefits of YouTube Premium are many: you get ad-free videos, background playback even when you leave the app or turn off your phone's display, offline downloads (you may have already had that though), access to YouTube originals, as well as Music Premium with unlimited ad-free streaming on the YouTube Music app.

YouTube Music is slowly spreading its tentacles and establishing itself as Play Music's successor. While the service still lacks many essential features for some users, it's good enough for others. Its most recent addition is Siri support on iOS — while Android integration with Assistant is still iffy.

The YouTube Music iOS app added Siri support a few days ago. It lets you ask Siri to play an artist, album, or song, as shown in the video demo below. The app already integrates with Siri Shortcuts, so you can also manually record a shortcut to launch a playlist.
The funny (read: very sad) part of this story is that this is the second Google app this month to add Siri integration before it properly implemented it on Android. Bear with me while I explain the idiosyncrasies of the situation.

If you live in a country where both Google Assistant and YouTube Music are officially available, you'll most likely find the latter in Assistant's music services settings.
But if Assistant isn't officially available, and you're using it by setting it to US English like millions of us are, you won't have any music service choices beside regular YouTube, even if YouTube Music has officially launched in your country and you have a Premium subscription to it. I’m starting to feel like I should pay $11.99 a month to subscribe to YouTube Premium just to get rid of the annoying pop-ups Google sends me almost daily. Google has decided to place pop-up ads in its own YouTube app for Premium subscriptions. This feels slightly acceptable at first, but Google has also decided these should spam you to death, sometimes full-screen, with no option to permanently dismiss them so you see them all the damn time.

I already subscribe to Spotify, which is far superior to YouTube Music, and I’d never pay $11.99 just to have fewer YouTube ads and background playback of videos on my phone.
Google’s efforts here have made sure I, and I bet many others, will never touch YouTube Music or YouTube Premium.

I wish Google was alone in its efforts, but it’s an age-old trick that other giant tech companies that also control major platforms have been experimenting with recently.

YouTube's support forum [...] it looks like the feature not quite been finalized. Interestingly, a similar offering is already available for Amazon Prime subscribers on Twitch, so it makes sense that YouTube would try to rival it with one of its own. Google has not yet responded for comment on the matter.

It's now clearer just how YouTube's streaming services stack up against rivals. Alphabet chief Sundar Pichai revealed during the company's latest earnings call that YouTube Premium and Music have a combined 20 million subscribers as of the fourth quarter of 2019.

That's a far cry from Spotify's 113 million paying users (as of September 2019) and Apple Music's 60 million (as of June 2019), but still makes YouTube one of the bigger music providers assuming Premium users are taking advantage of their included Music access.
The company's live YouTube TV service fared relatively well, too, with about 2 million subscribers by the end of 2019.

Sources have confirmed to 9to5Google that Google has rolled out the ability to upload one's entire music library in an internal build of YouTube Music. This feature is similar to what the company offered with Google Play Music.

This feature will mark a big step in helping Google Play Music users to transition to YouTube Music. As per one source, the public release of this feature is right around the corner. It is also rumored that Google will start offering Google Play Music users an option to transition to YouTube Music with their entire music library within the next few months. The company will then shutter down Play Music in the second half of 2020.

YouTube Music lacked a lot of features but Google planned on adding all the necessary features and transition users to its new music streaming service by 2019. That, however, did not happen but over the last few months, Google has been consistently improving YouTube Music as it possibly looks to take on Spotify and Apple Music.

Earlier this month, we reported how Google is already testing YouTube Music’s cloud library internally with employees. An official support document today details how the functionality will work, suggesting that a launch is coming soon.

"Add your personal music collection to your YouTube Music library by uploading your songs and albums. Once your music is uploaded, you can use YouTube Music to play your uploaded music as part of your listening experience."
Once live, you’ll be able to upload songs and albums by visiting music.youtube.com on the web. Users can drag files or tap their profile icon in the top-right corner and open “Upload music.” YouTube Music supports FLAC, M4A, MP3, OGG, and WMA files with associated metadata and album art included.

Google warns how “your uploaded music may take some time to show up in your library, even after it has been successfully uploaded.” The service will automatically remove duplicates from your library.

YouTube Music's highly anticipated library upload functionality has finally arrived. As per the folks at 9to5Google, the feature is now widely available for users. As detailed by Google last week, users can upload music to their YouTube Music library only from the web app.

As long as the feature has been enabled for your account, you will be able to see a new "Upload music" menu when you click on your profile picture in the YouTube Music web app.
After you have selected the songs that you want to upload, you will see a progress bar at the bottom left of the screen. While you cannot upload songs from your phone using the YouTube Music app, you can view them by tapping on "Uploads." The uploaded songs can be played ad-free in the background – even if you do not have a YouTube Music Premium subscription.

YouTube Premium not only includes an ad-free YouTube experience, but access to the YouTube Music streaming service too.

You'll also get access to the music streaming service, YouTube Music Premium, so you can enjoy ad-free music in the background, download songs and create playlists. While this is certainly a very cool promotion, as you can see above, there is a big catch. Sadly, this is one of those deals where if you forget to cancel, it automatically renews.

Surprisingly, existing YouTube Premium customers can take advantage of the promotion too, although not easily. T-Mobile explains you must first cancel your current subscription and then re-sign up using the T-Mobile Tuesdays app. And yes, that app is available for both iOS and Android. Granted, I've been paying the new platform occasional visits to see if it managed to become a worthy replacement for Play Music, but some concerns haven't been addressed yet. With YTM receiving feature after feature lately, I've still decided to go hands-on with YouTube Music exclusively for a while to see if I'm able to switch to the new app in its current state.

While I was busy exploring YouTube Music from my perspective as a Play Music subscriber, my colleague Hagop Kavafian switched from Spotify to YouTube Music. He went for YouTube Premium and writes that while he has some gripes with the streaming service, it probably still suits many people's needs, and that you can save quite some money and time spent on YouTube ads if you watch a lot of videos. In the end, it comes down to a question of personal preference for him.

Unfortunately, the equation isn't that simple here because YouTube Music will replace Google Play Music one day. You have to accept YouTube Music's quirks if you currently use and love Play Music, or you have to switch to another platform altogether.

In January, we spotted YouTube testing a new Premium perk that gives subscribers one free channel membership every month. The Google video site is now making this new benefit official for a limited time in five countries.

After a false start earlier this year, Google tells us that YouTube Premium subscribers in Brazil, United Kingdom, Ireland, Japan, and South Korea will get one free channel membership every month. The value differs by country, but is equivalent to $4.99 — the starting price level.
This is currently classified as a “limited time offer,” with subscribers getting a free monthly channel membership until May 31. It’s already live for one reader that emailed us today.

The membership is non-recurring in that fans have to decide every month who to support.

Play Music has been in limbo since YouTube Music relaunched two years ago.
Users have had no choice but to keep using it as switching would require starting their audio experience from scratch. That’s changing today as Google starts letting you transition Play Music libraries to YouTube Music.
What gets migrated
Your library encompasses a great deal of content, personal preferences, and history.
All Google Play purchases and file uploads are also included in the transition, with the cloud locker being Play Music’s defining feature for fans of the service. You can find this content by visiting the Library page, selecting Albums/Songs/Artists, and then the Upload tab.
The transfer process
To encourage old users to migrate, there are a handful of direct upgrades in YouTube Music. Playlists now max out at 5,000 songs — instead of 1,000, while Google has doubled the number of personal tracks that can be uploaded to 100,000. Much of the transfer experience today is aimed at people just coming over to the new service.

Gradually rollout + what’s next
All Play Music users will be emailed with detailed instructions on how to begin. This process will take a couple of weeks as Google rolls it out on a country-by-country basis. Pricing and benefits will not change as part of this transfer as users get grandfathered in with their old monthly rate.

The company explicitly said that the migration tool would become available “over the next couple of weeks.” A warning in YouTube Music today notes that “transfers are delayed” due to “high demand.”

Depending on your library, the process can officially take a “few minutes or up to a few days to complete.”
Those transferring again today are met with a new warning on the YouTube Music status page: “Due to high demand, transfers are delayed.” This message did not appear when the tool first launched, and it now shows up immediately after you start the process. Once you’ve whipped up a killer mix, other users can check that out on your profile, along with other public playlists you’ve made. If you stumble upon someone else’s great playlist, you can take a peek at other public ones they’ve crafted, too.
