Over the past decade, Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos have helped billions of people securely store and manage their emails, documents, photos, videos and more. Today, people are uploading more content than ever before—in fact, more than 4.3 million GB are added across Gmail, Drive and Photos every day.

To continue providing everyone with a great storage experience and to keep pace with the growing demand, we're announcing important upcoming storage changes to your Google Account.
These changes will apply to Photos and Drive (specifically Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms and Jamboard files) and will enable us to continue investing in these products for the future.

We're also introducing new policies for consumer Google Accounts that are either inactive or over their storage limit across Gmail, Drive (including Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms and Jamboard files) and Photos, to bring our policies more in line with industry standards.

These storage policy changes won’t take effect until June 1, 2021.

New content that will count toward your Google Account storage
Beginning June 1, any new photo or video uploaded in High quality in Google Photos will count toward your free 15 GB storage quota or any additional storage you’ve purchased as a Google One member. To make this transition easier, we’ll exempt all High quality photos and videos you back up before June 1.

Also starting June 1, any new Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms or Jamboard file will begin counting toward your free 15 GB of allotted storage or any additional storage provided through Google One. Existing files within these products will not count toward storage, unless they’re modified on or after June 1. You can learn more in our Help Center.

Google nixes unlimited Google Photos uploads

Five years ago Google promised to store all your photos forever, as long as you allowed them to compress them in a lossy fashion.
It seems their users were more enthusiastic than they expected, and after more than 4 trillion photos have been uploaded, today the company if formally withdrawing this promise.

Starting June 1, 2021, any new photos and videos you upload will count toward the free 15 GB of storage that comes with every Google Account or the additional storage you’ve purchased as a Google One member. Your Google Account storage is shared across Drive, Gmail and Photos.
Thankfully existing High-quality photos (photos which Google recompressed) and videos are exempt from this change.

The change does not affect Pixel 1 to Pixel 5 devices, which is exempt from the change.

Google warns Google Drive users: Use it, or lose your files

Google announced a new storage policy Wednesday governing user accounts, and while most of the resulting headlines focused of a new price tag for Google Photos, an important change went mostly overlooked. Notably, going forward, Google says that if you don't check in on your Google Drive files every now and then, it may delete them.

Google frames this change as a way to tidy up abandoned digital detritus, perhaps left over from long-forgotten accounts.

"If you're inactive in one or more of these services for two years (24 months), Google may delete the content in the product(s) in which you're inactive."
In other words, Google at present has no plans to just start deleting your stuff willy-nilly. However, it's letting you know that, come June 1 2021, the clock is ticking.

"The simplest way to keep your data active is to periodically visit Gmail, Google Photos, and Google Drive (and/or collaborative content creation apps like Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms, Jamboard and Sites) on the web or through an official Google app," explains the support page. "Make sure you're signed in and connected to the internet."

Notice the key phrase "through an official Google app." That's Google's way of letting you know that a third-party email app, for example, won't cut it.

UPDATE: Nov. 12, 2020, 9:20 a.m. PST: This piece has been updated to note that a third-party email client which loads, sends, or "Archives, deletes, labels, marks as read, stars, or performs any other email actions" is sufficient to keep your Gmail active.

Google confirms future Pixels won't get unlimited Photos storage

Google announced yesterday that it would end free unlimited photo and video storage in Google Photos, and all data uploaded after June 1st, 2021 would take up space in your Google account.
However, the company said all current Pixel phones wouldn't be affected. Android Central is now reporting that future Pixel phones will not be exempt from the new policy, citing sources familiar with the matter.

We've reached out to Google for comment, but it would be surprising for the company to drop one of the main advantages to buying a Pixel phone.

Google has now confirmed to Android Police that future Pixel phones won't have free Google Photos backup, even with the regular "high-quality" option that current Pixels have. As the company said in the original blog post, all Pixels sold right now are exempt from the changes.

There are two ways to look at Google’s recent announcement that it will discontinue unlimited Google Photos storage starting next June.

The first is Google’s official explanation: People are uploading a lot more photos and videos than they used to, making the service harder to sustain for free.
But there’s another explanation that Google didn’t make quite as explicit: The end of unlimited Google Photos storage marks a pivot of sorts for the search giant, away from being so overwhelmingly dependent on targeted ads as its dominant business model.

BEYOND THE AD BUSINESS
Google’s shift away from an ad-centric model isn’t entirely new. While advertising made up nearly 90% of the company’s revenues in 2015, that share has since fallen to 83.9% last year and 80.6% over the first nine months of 2020.
Still, there are signs that Google may be accelerating those nonadvertising efforts, with subscription revenue as the focal point.

Last month, for instance, Google discontinued unlimited cloud storage for business users as part of its rebranding from G Suite to Google Workspace. Instead of getting unlimited storage for $12 per user per month, teams with at least five members will get 2 TB of storage per user at that price.

Google Photos' free unlimited storage ends on June 1st

You have less than a month to upload all the images you want on Google Photos without having to pay anything for additional storage. As Google announced late last year, any "high quality" photo or video you upload to the service will count towards a 15GB limit after June 1st. That cap will be shared with your Gmail, as well as your Workspace documents, slides and spreadsheets, so you'll have to be smart when it comes to backing up your snapshots.

Currently, the Photos service provides unlimited backup for high quality media files, which are slightly reduced in quality from the original. Storage is only limited for files uploaded in their original format. After June 1st, however, you'll have to pay for a Google One storage plan if your photo uploads and Workspace files go beyond 15GB.
