Google is working on another communications application, this one for workplaces, that will combine several different platforms it already operates, according to a new report from The Information. This new product is designed to unify different Google services the company sells to businesses, including parts of its G Suite like corporate-grade Gmail and Google Drive.

It would also bundle together the various, somewhat confusing variants of Hangouts. Once a consumer-focused communications platform, Hangouts is now geared toward enterprise customers. It has since been split into Hangouts Meet, a video chat app, and Hangouts Chat, a real-time text-based successor to Gchat.

As for why Google is planning yet another app, The Information reports that it could be a way for Google to win over enterprise customers who’ve moved all their communication, chat and otherwise, into central collaboration hubs like Microsoft Teams and Slack.

Google has declined to comment on the apparent leak.

Whether or not customers are willing to bite is another matter. Google has routinely struggled to offer consistent, compelling messaging apps, and there's no guarantee companies won't just shrug their shoulders and carry on using the hodge podge of services they rely on today.

As of early last year, G Suite had 5 million paying customers in steady growth for the company’s Microsoft Office competitor. An interview today reveals that G Suite has 2 billion active users as Google hints at what’s next for the service.

The new stat comes from Axios speaking to G Suite head Javier Soltero, who previously worked at Microsoft and founded mail app Accompli, which became the basis of Outlook Mobile. This 2 billion MAU count was reached at the end of 2019 and looks to be Google’s annual update about G Suite growth.

Google reportedly wants to bring together Gmail, Drive storage, text with Hangouts Chat, and Hangouts Meet video calling into one unified app. Calendar integration is also present, but users apparently still need to open the standalone client. Mobile apps have already been shown off to partners, while the most likely announcement venue is Cloud Next 2020.

Axios: Scoop: Google's G Suite cracks 2 billion users

Google's G Suite, which includes Gmail, Google Docs, Hangouts, Meet and other apps, quietly passed a major milestone at the end of last year: It now has more than 2 billion monthly active users, G Suite boss Javier Soltero told Axios Wednesday.
Why it matters: Long seen as the upstart challenger to Microsoft Office, Google's productivity suite is now one of the two incumbents, facing fresh rivals of its own.

He also sees room for improvement in better integrating the separate apps. "I think we still have work to do," Soltero said.

Google's strategy around messaging and communication applications is in a constant state of flux, an issue that has only been made worse by the isolated teams working on Duo, Hangouts Chat/Meet, and other products. While the numerous messaging applications might not be going away anytime soon, the teams behind them are finally operating under one roof.

Javier Soltero, who was already serving as the Vice President and General manager of G Suite, has now also been put in charge of Messages, Duo, and the phone app on Android. In other words, Soltero is now leading the teams for every one of Google's communication platforms.
