    this forum is biased!
well, whatever you decide to choose, a must-have freeware tool for anyone, is Drweb's CureIt.

Avira Personal Classic + Safe browser (FF or Opera) , asquared free or superantispyware, and you should be all set IMO.

I don't think there is a "best freeware combo". The combo I'm using works well on my PC, the individual items work well together, any slowdown is not significant to me. The same combo may not work well on another machine.
There are also different groups of combos, for example, AV + AS + FW, or HIPS + VM, or "VM + FW + Imaging" etc etc.
A read through the forum will reveal much about different users preferences. And more to the point, (often), why they have those preferences.
Sometimes something you try may need to be configured slightly differently, or have another program configured slightly differently for it all to work in a streamlined way.
So, terribly sorry, you do have to try them all out, together and apart, yourself, on your machine.
But if you still want my combo (A mixture of AV, AS, HIPS, hardening/immunity, and FW) feel free to ask.

    (In no particular order)
    Avast! Home AV.
    SpywareTerminator AS/HIPS
    Comodo FW, 2.4
Comodo Memory Firewall (Supposed to alert/able to block buffer overflows.)
    Firefox browser with noscript.
    MVPS Hosts file.
Secunia PSI software inspector- to ensure applications stay patched/updated.
Regular cleaning of browser cache/ temp files etc, using Ccleaner, also manages cookies.
Several demand scanners, most commonly used SAS, AVG AS, and Asquared. Oh, and Prevx online demand scan. (Prevx CSI free.)
BTW, I'm beginner/intermediate. Haven't had malware for yonks.

So your pc's pretty fast huh? Including the amount of ram, dump a few stat's.
That you've mentioned slow down's, you should really comment on which.

    Well, that's certainly hi-spec enough.
    What OS?
Do you have lots of stuff running at startup? (Games, maybe? Why else would you need that performance?) But check for other stuff running at start, too.
And when the PC seems to be sluggish, does task manager show anything using a high CPU? That would be a good place to start.

Rather depends on what you want your freeware to do. You could for instance try running a combo of sandboxie + Returnil, with or without an on demand scanner. Personally I'd say you spent a fair amount on that rig, so I wouldn't be worried spending just a little more on something like sandboxie to automate the program running under sandbox if that type of combo ran well. Wonderig where / when you experience the slowdowns, general application running? \or web surfing? or what? When you say slow it down how do you measure this, some people just get it into their head that their PC is running slower, usually cause the startup has slowed as additional software loads, but when it's actually up and running it doesn't do much slower at all.
