SCHWINN Is The Greatest Bicycle Name In America, But No Longer "Made In Chicago"

http://radio.weblogs.com/0107064/article/schwinnfactory.jpg Founded by German immigrant Ignaz Schwinn in the late nineteenth century, the Schwinn Bicycle Company was a Chicago institution for many years. The picture above left shows the entrance to the St. Sylvester's Catholic School's "Schwinn Hall" the former site of the Schwinn family Logan Square mansion at the corner of Palmer and Humboldt.

The company's heyday was in the 1950's, when its lovingly crafted, chrome-bedecked monsters were a kid's dream. But the company ignored a shift that occurred in the 1970's when young adults had taken to cycling, a sport that demanded lighter frames. When management finally realized the trend, they discovered that Schwinn's underfinanced, antiquated Chicago factory at 1856 N. Kostner, pictured at left, could not produce the welding for the new, thinner tube frames. This forced them to outsource the frame work to Taiwan's Giant Bicycles in the 1980s. The company also ignored the concept of the mountain bike and during the last half of that decade, sales plunged by half, and finally the company was forced to file for bankruptcy in 1992.

There is still a Schwinn Bicycle Company, but the Schwinn family no longer owns it, and it is based in Colorado these days, not in it's original home, Chicago.

Pictured left is the unique Schwinn bicycle logo that is still visible above the old factory entrance at Kostner and Courtland.
