GitHub launches iOS app, Android app coming in 2020

Popular project collaboration tool GitHub today announced a range of upgrades for programmers and developers working together including the launch of a GitHub mobile app for iOS smartphones and iPads. An Android app will be released in early 2020, GitHub VP of engineering Dana Lawson told VentureBeat.

GitHub on mobile devices will allow users to receive notifications from open-source or private projects underway, merge pull requests, file a new issue or add code to repositories.

“This is kind of like the missing link to the GitHub experience,” she said in a phone interview with VentureBeat. “With mobile you can manage, triage, and clear notifications, collaborate on pull requests, and then also you can receive push notifications when directly mentioned.”
The news was announced today at GitHub Universe, a conference for developers being held at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco.

GitHub Actions for managing and adopting effective workflows, and Packages, a packages management registry, are now generally available.
Self-hosted runners will also be made generally available for actions so enterprise customers can host actions on their own servers.

A number of additional features were introduced today including semantic code navigation for all Ruby, Python, and Go repositories, the ability to schedule pull request reminders, and to assign code reviews to specific team members.

GitHub's new app arrives on Android in Early Access

Two months ago, GitHub revealed that a brand new app would enter beta soon, and now it has finally arrived.

GitHub said the new mobile apps would only focus on providing functionality that software developers might want on the go. While you can browse through repositories, share feedback in discussions, perform searches, and more, you can't actually view code unless it is part of a merge request. Only the README file in each repository is visible.
The app does seem to work, though I would have appreciated the ability to view code — [...] Perhaps that functionality will arrive in a later update.

GitHub released an all-new mobile app in beta last month, and now it's ready for prime time.
The new app is mostly the same experience from the initial beta. It's primarily designed for quickly checking in on your repositories — replying to comments, viewing and merging pull requests, and so on.

Unfortunately, while the iOS GitHub app has a nice two-column interface for iPads, the Android app doesn't scale up to tablets very well at all.

GitHub's mobile app to go open source? Definitely "maybe"

In a world increasingly powered by open source software, there's still plenty of software that really doesn't need to be open source. Or, perhaps put a better way, there is software that could be open source and no one would care or contribute.

GitHub's new mobile app probably doesn't fall into that category. While most developers won't necessarily have interest or aptitude in contributing to a voice memo or word processing app, it's a fair bet that they'd have plenty to say (and code) when it comes to GitHub.
"Maybe"
Soon after Ryan Nystrom, GitHub's director of engineering, announced the new mobile app for iOS and Android, with the promise of "TONS more features in upcoming app updates," it was clear that some developers wanted just one big feature: An open source license.

Tim Oliver, an iOS developer, asked if there were plans to make GitHub's mobile app open source. Nystrom, tantalizingly, answered with "Maybe."

That "maybe" could actually work for GitHub because, well, GitHub! After all, so much of today's open source software development happens on/through GitHub. Each of those developers has a vested interest in improving the GitHub experience (mobile and otherwise) so as to improve the work they're able to do through it.
