GIMP 2.6.0 Released, With GEGL Support

With GIMP 2.6, the toolbox menu bar has been removed and its functionality merged with the main menu bar, toolbox and docks are now a utility window, and there is now also the ability to pan beyond the image border. Additionally, the GIMP free select tool has been greatly improved, there is now brush dynamics capabilities, most color operations now use GEGL (the Generic Graphics Library), and many other changes.

GEGL

Important progress towards high bit-depth and non-destructive editing in GIMP has been made. Most color operations in GIMP are now ported to the powerful graph based image processing framework GEGL, meaning that the interal processing is being done in 32bit floating point linear light RGBA. By default the legacy 8bit code paths are still used, but a curious user can turn on the use of GEGL for the color operations with Colors / Use GEGL.
In addition to porting color operations to GEGL, an experimental GEGL Operation tool has been added, found in the Tools menu. It enables applying GEGL operations to an image and it gives on-canvas previews of the results. The screenshot to the right shows this for a Gaussian Blur.

Sadly no x64 support yet on Windows so I use this for Linux and for Windows I use the excellent Paint.Net

Well under Ubuntu x64 it runs in native x64 mode. If I had time, I would have compiled for Windows as well.

GIMP 2.6 changes are mostly internal

The GIMP -- the GNU Image Manipulation Program -- is one of the flagships of free software. On October 1 the project released version 2.6, with many new and improved features. Most of the user-visible features are just polish; the real changes are lurking under the hood.

GIMP 2.6.1 was released October 9th. Also, here's the GIMP Portable version from PortableApps.com.
