    Hacking at a Picture
    tutorial 17

It is possible to use pictures with clothing from the web
in order to dress *digital models or even real life people.
Although this technique may appear a bit brutal :doubt: it may come
in very handy if you want to learn how to correct and change
the appearance of your clothes in a photograph.:)

    The Tools

    http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/5953/toolsused8is.png

The selection tool to select areas I want to modify. (top left)

The magic Wand to select and paint the hands with the paint tool
or bucket with a shade similar to the face (usually lighter though)
and I also increased the view of the picture while working on it.
Menu > view > Zoom in or just press down on + on your numeric
    keyboard. (left row, 2nd tool)

The paint Tool or bucket to fill areas with a colour previously selected
with the eye-dropper. i.e. the hands. (left row, 3rd tool)

The brush to repaint the curtains with black and add details
to the face & hair. (left row, 4th tool)

The stamp tool to take a sample of the fur, window frame
and to paint areas with those samples. To use the Stamp tool
you do CTRL key down + click on the zone to duplicate
then you simply painted on the area you want to cover
with your motif. (left row, 6th tool)

The eye-dropper tool or pipette tool to take samples of colour
that I need to reproduce. (right row, 1st tool)

The spray Tool or aerosol to spray some paint in the wrinkles
areas of the blouse. (left row,2nd tool)

I had this model. Well...frankly if I were wearing a dress like that
    I think I could manage a little smile!:D

    http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/4746/60givenchygirl7xv.jpg

I wanted to paste this model, Jessi, in the Givenchy picture....
so I had to remove the other model and add a few corrections
    to the image after.

    http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/1840/smillingjessi0ly.png

Chopped picture and the tools I used for specific areas....
    http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/5896/method3ms.jpg

Basically, I simply removed the model by repainting over the areas
the head was covering, like the curtains and the window frame.
The stamp tool was used to paint any area that needed
a motif over not just the colour.(see stamp tool instructions above)
Like the window frame, the blouse, the fur on the left and so on....

The hands were way too light when compared to the face so
I selected them with the Magic wand and then, with the Paint tool,
I coloured them with a shade that could match the face.
Notice that I had to redraw some parts of the blouse with
the brush tool and I added a few highlights on the face
    and hair. Enfin!:p

freshly resized & pasted Jessi (no corrections were made yet!)

    http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/4355/2preparation9yc.png

The right Jessi with the face, hands and blouse corrected.....:)

I hope that you liked this tutorial!:)

    ------------------------------------------------------------

*I have a program called Poser which is a 3D program
that allows you to create your own human models
and add clothing to them after. The thing is that you have
to buy the clothes apart in 3d stores.... and it can
become quite pricey in the end when you have many models
to dress up. It is not costly just in terms of money but
also in time; when you move your characters or animate them,
chances are that the clothes will break apart
You must use the program parameters to find a way to mend them
    ...which is a bit annoying!

Thanx for the update Tommy. I have the free version only
but your post made me think that I had to update my version too.
Oh, and once at PF's webpage, I noticed that there were several
selection packages they offered to download. I grabbed them along. :)

Hey gang, I was just playing around for this easy design.

    http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i246/moedfoo/Photobucket/7_ca_deskalert0.jpg

You just create a gradient on a new project, I chose blue and orange - bottom to top at 100% each.
Copy this one you just made.
Then go to, filter - deform - twirl. Set the background color to white and the amount to 3.
Use the magic wand to select the white areas ( You have to repeat this for each white section ) - right click - paste in.
    Right click - flip vertical
Top menu - selection - center selection
    Right click - validate paste
Then use some blur or Gaussian blur to blend.

@ Marja, Don't tell me that you don't like white peacock dresses?:D
...hope they're fake otherwise it would have taken (at least) 20
    feathered guys to make it!

    --------------------------

    Nice effect Narov!:)
I followed your instructions but blurred the whole image
instead of blurring the selections and then I augmented the
    contrast a wee bit!

    thanx!

Looks good Uguel, yea I should have said to blur the whole image to blend better. I used a little progressive contour too, but the sky's the limit. :D

    HI ALL!

I did this with a few other colors I like, but, some just didn't turn out as good as the red and black..Also, Narov, how did you make your name look 3D and with the gradient in it?
Tried alot of different effects, but, settled for this one for now, I added a light ripple effect you can see...
    and a teeny-tiny border.....:)

Uguel, there are WHITE peacocks? Bet there are alot of naked ones running around now!! Brrrr! :(:D

    Have a great day....!!

    Marja:cool:
Wonder if I could put little sunglasses in that lesson somehow..:p
    Just a thought!

    Just noticed-MULTIPLE UPLOADS!!!!??:eek::eek:
Geez, WHAT we could do with that!:shifty: LOL!

He surely applied the text as a selection by hitting "transform to selection"
in the text dialog box and then applied a gradient into the selection.
But I can't say if he applied the drop shadow the way I did it here....
I just wrote a black text and then I applied a text (transformed
to a selection) filled with the gradient right over it and moved
the text just a bit to the right after.:)

Here's something that can be useful for some members, or those
who need to know how to do a bar sig for forums.
    :) Since
we're now "talking sigs" I thought of sending this one today.....

    Bar Sig Tutorial
    tutorial 18

this is what we will do ...
    http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/4580/examplesig2on2.jpg

Once again, this tutorial is very simple and easy to do.
Basically speaking, it consists of applying a text over
an image that was previously filled with a gradient.

    Here's how I made it....

    1. Open up a new image.
    I had 320 x 28 pixels

We will apply a gradient to the sig

    2. Menu > Colour > Gradient

I had the settings as in the screenshot below... and (2) is what I got.

    http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/1714/1barsigto0wd4.jpg

We will now apply a text to our sig.

    3. Menu > Image > text
I chose a rectangular font but other straight fonts can do to.
    Bold and Italic are optional....
The font was filled with white and then I went to "Effect"
and chose black for the stroke. Once done, click Ok to apply.

    Text Step 1 "Text"
    http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/4683/muirdt8.jpg

    Text Step 2 "Effect"
    http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/4264/3barsigvz5.jpg

Strech the your text to make it about 2/3 of the image.
...for this grab one corner with your mouse and pull on it
to extend it a bit. Repeat with the opposite corner.

    http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/7279/muircornerne0.jpg

Everytime you resize a text, it is always good to sharpen it a l'il bit after.

    4. Go to the Menu > Filter > Sharpen

We will now apply a dark border to the sig.

    5. Go to the Menu > Image > Outside frame
I chose black as a colour but it could have been any other
dark colour that matches. Click Ok.

    And this is it! :D

    Other examples

    http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/8153/examplesig3rs1.jpg

Notice that you can apply shapes, images or other graphics in your sig.

Just try'n some of your sig stuff, Uguel.
Hope narov doesn't mind me using his sig for practice...:)

That Wilders' tag looks really ! :)

The second one I used the bevel, but probably not the best for such
    small text, right?

    Have a good weekend!

Hey, they look good Marja.:thumb: As you notice each font brings a different
mood to a graphic. I can't say that mine were the most appropriate ones though.
They look a bit like ads for transport companies, lol. :D Oh well!
Remember that you can sharpen your text after so your text
    will come out even more.

I agree narov did very well here. I'd like him to explain how he did the reflection.
I can have a guess but I prefer that he explains himself.

    Thanks, good looking bars Marja.

I see some of the edges don't look that great doing that 3D bevel, probably shouldn't have tried to make it look so thick.

Thanks Uguel, the reflection isn't too hard.

Put the selection back over your text and copy it.
You can go to the top menu but I usually just right click to get the options quickly.
Get rid of the selection and paste your copied text.
Right click - transform - flip vertical.
Use the arrows on your keyboard or cursor to place the text at the base of the other. ( You can also lower the height of the text a bit for effect. )

    http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i246/moedfoo/coloringgifs/7_ca_ptf2.jpg

Right click - paste options - and lower the opacity.

    http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i246/moedfoo/coloringgifs/7_ca_ptf1.jpg

You can also try some of the other options to give it some skew for effect, then set it in place.

    Hi jamm!

    you wrote:
how do you have a colored picture and then you make it black & white but you want something to be colored

Here's what you can do with Photofiltre....

    1. You open your image in Photofiltre.
    2. You duplicate it by going to the Menu > Image > Duplicate

you will now work on the duplicated image only. Close the original image.

    3. Go to the toolbar on your right, select the white arrow which is the selection tool (1).

then once you have it selected, select the Polygon tool and start tracing the contour or the
edge of your subject with it (2).

    http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/4585/selectiontooljn2.jpg

.....I had a rose picture and chose to select one rose in it.

once your shape is completely selected, make sure to close the path of the selection; you
close the selection exactly on the beginning of the dashed line that you made. Then go to step 4

shape selected with the polygon tool

    http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/3189/roseselectionld4.jpg

    4. Go to the Menu > Selection and invert your selection in order to have
your subject colours not selected and modified but only what is around it.

Now we're going turn into grayscale everything outside the selected shape...

    5. Go to the Menu > Filter > Color> Grayscale

Et voilà! your subject is in colour but all the area around is in grayscale.

    example 1

    example 2

    Hope this help!
