Apple Arcade introduced the idea of all-you-can-eat subscription-based mobile gaming to the mainstream.
Today, a startup called GameClub is launching in the U.S. to offer an alternative. For $4.99 per month, mobile consumers will be able to access a library that includes some of the best games to have ever hit the App Store.

It’s a way to subscribe to actual App Store games, similar to Arcade. In GameClub’s case, however, the focus is not on new releases but on quality games that already have proven track records and high ratings.
In fact, many of GameClub have Apple’s own editorially selected “Game of the Year” lists in years past. And like the games offered on Apple Arcade, they don’t have ads or any in-app purchases.

The founders say they were inspired to address the issues caused by the free-to-play model that’s infiltrated the gaming industry. In addition, they had witnessed a decline in consumers’ willingness to purchase content upfront, which was impacting the industry.

Additionally, GameClub says it’s transparent with developers about its subscription revenue, so there’s no question about which games are earning or why.
With the close of a seed round last week, GameClub is backed by $4.6 million in funding.

GameClub, a mobile gaming subscription service, is now available for Android after launching on iOS in 2019.

The service features a variety of games including Puzzlejuice Paint It Black, Rope Rescue, among others. Billing itself as a Netflix for games, the service has over 125 games available at launch, alongside a family plan for up to 12 additional users. On Android, GameClub says that over a dozen of the 125 titles have never been released on the platform prior.

"Subscription is a healthier and less expensive way to enjoy games, eliminating the oppressive ads and loot boxes that define so-called free-to-play," said GameClub CEO Dan Sherman, "GameClub is the only service that brings these benefits to the entire world of iOS and Android gamers.

GameClub doesn't quite have the breadth or market power of those two juggernauts, but for people who are into older mobile games, they could prove to be a useful service.
