In the early 2000s Apple was the standard of innovation and design. Every other company was forced to keep up or die.

The 2019 version of Apple couldn’t be further from that reality. At a two-hour “special event” two weeks ago, Tim Cook took to the stage to announce a series of also-ran services [...]
Where has Apple been for the last six to seven years? What was once the most innovative company in the world is now laughably behind in some of the most ubiquitous services on the planet.

Even product categories Apple once led in, like design solutions for creatives, are getting more innovative makeovers elsewhere — far away from Cupertino.

Ultimately, what Apple faces is not a money, talent, or ideas problem. It’s an ownership problem that starts at the top. If Apple is going to be a leader once more, Tim Cook needs to go beyond his operator roots and learn to be a creator.

Apple's App Store downloads went into decline, possibly for the first time ever

Downloads from Apple's App Store declined for the first time in four years, and perhaps the first time ever, according to data collected by Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty.
The decline comes as sales of iPhone handsets are expected to decline by up to 20% in Apple's fiscal Q1, according to Nomura analyst Jeffrey Kvaal and his team.

The pattern is potentially worrying for Apple, whose management has been hoping that declining device sales will be offset by an increase in sales from services, which includes the App Store.

As the phones in use get older, more of those users would want to upgrade as newer models were released, they argued.
But the super cycle of buyers never arrived.
Less well-off people are price-conscious and can't afford to continuously pay more for newer phones.
