My own observation is that F-Secure normally updates once per day, and not on week-ends. That is the one concern I have with an otherwise excellent AV.

I am going to keep tabs on the updates for a week or so and see what it is doing. My own program does not quickly update even if there is one on the server. Sometimes it takes two or three trys to successfully update. Not a good think.

What is this antivirus based on, the KAV engine of version 5 or the new 2006?

It has the latest KAV engine and will get any updates Kaspersky makes to the engine.

Well there is no engine versions, there is just one unified engine. Similar as BitDefender.
There is no difference between engine and signature part or unpacker/emulator part. Everything is packed as engine. Thats why base detection never really changed from KAV3 to KAV4 and KAV5 and again now with KAV6.
It just evolved through time. Sure there are new features like Proactive Defense in KAV6 but engine itself is still the same (PDM is now also a part of it).

Oh okay. I thought that each AV engine version changed from old version to new and thought that was the reason KAV 2006 uses less memory than KAV 5.

It demands I uninstall Mcafee, Adaware and Bitdefender before I install it. I can understand why it flagged Mcafee and Bitdefender, even though Mcafee is my only real-time, but why Adaware? F-secure has been the only AV program I have ever tried to use that complains about my previously installed programs. Not worth it!

Some others will also "complain" and then one has to decide which he prefers. I am surprised that you had McAfee and BD, unles BD was the free one. I don't know if it has anything running or not.

I once had an AVs support folks tell me to remove some programs that were just shortcuts to on-line scanners in addition to some active programs. I realize that the online-scanners do put some cookies or something on your system and it stays there unless you remove it.

I find F-Secure less intrusive in that way than some others.

Here what their website says about the Antivirus: F-Secure Anti-Virus 2006 protects against viruses, worms and spyware.

Here's what it says about the Internet Security: This all-in-one security solution protects against viruses, worms, Trojans, spyware, adware and other malicious code (malware).

So the Antivirus has no protection against trojans?

Yes, I am running VSE8I with Bitdefender free 8 as well as a bunch of other free ondemand scanners. In my experience, only F-Secure (as well as another re-branded form of F-Secure) complained about previously installed apps. I dunno, while I appreciate the attempt to prevent conflict (as well as the marketing intention) I like to run programs that don't complain about the exsistance of others on my machine.

AV Comparatives indicates that F-Secure has a 99.25% detection rate for trojans.

Is F-Secure Anti-Spyware 2006 part of the AV?

Did they used to have an AS and discontinue it? I noticed McAfee AS is listed in the results also, but has now been folded into the McAfee AV product.

Questions based on Acadia posting that F-Secure Anti-Spyware 2006 is the #1 ranked AS beating Spy Sweeper, Spyware Doctor.....

I replied that my experience of the frequency of F-Secure update was once per day.
Subsequently I have been keeping a record of the updates, and Firecat was correct and I was not.

F-Secure has been updating twice per day, and I am confident that if there is a good reason (outbreak) there will be additional updates. I guess that it would update on week-ends if an outbreak occurred.

Just wanted to set the record straight.

    Best,
    Jerry

Well, F-secure on my computer worked like a charm (XP SP2 P3 500MHz with
256MB SDRAM). No issues with any scans but it was a bit slow on some
occassions. It checked for updates everytime I logged on to the Net. The
    updates were provided daily.

The engine is a program which loads the signatures as the data and does
the scanning. Its either an EXE or a DLL file. There is no unified engine.
The Romanian AVs just use the word 'engine' to define the engine and the
    signatures.

F-Secure uses KAV5 engine and they modified it to the internal version 6. No
reason to be confused with the original KAV6. It also uses Ad Aware engine
and thats why it is demanding an uninstall of Ad Aware. Now-a-days AVs
are far more complex than F-Prot. Thats why even when the realtime
scanner is disabled, some components are still loaded like the low level
drivers or hooks. Thats why some AVs recommend the customers to run
    only one AV product.

Yes, F-Secure can detect spywares and trojans.
