    Hi

Does anyone know of a free boot-time defrag program not including PageDefrag?

In particular, is there a free program that can defrag the MFT?

    Thanks

Boot-time defrag is necessary only for defragging the page file and the MFT, isn't it? I don't think any of the free defraggers can defrag the MFT, even if they do a 'boot-time' defrag.

Also, boot-time defrag has become less important than it used to be. For eg, Diskeeper 2k8 defrags most of the MFT online, and in combination with fragshield, it's hardly necessary to execute boot-time defrags frequently these days for me (also PF is static, and on a separate partition).:)

That is somewhat true. Boot-time defragmentation is used by some beause it defrags not only the swap file but any file that was locked or in use by the system at the time of defragmentation. Any file that has a locked handle will not be defragged unless you use a boot-time defragger.

As a long time PD user I can tell you UD is excellent and makes a difference over other defraggers including PD, has boot time defrag for system files and works good. Comes in native x64 version which is a plus.

Microsoft's bcupdate2.exe apparently can defragment the MFT. See here.

Pity, that it does not work in Vistax64 due to an unsigned driver, I would like to have some boot defrag tool, but only freeware. As for pagefile, I have it disabled.

    Hi

On their website it does not mention boot-time defrag, and I remember I used it a long time ago and I don't think it had it?

    Thanks

    Hi

I can't access the site because I need to register, and when I click register nothing happens.

Do you know where to download this bcupdate2.exe directly?

    Thanks

    Hi

I thought UD had no boot-time yet?

I know PD has boot-time but it is $40 and I don't like all the services that are permanently running.

    Thanks

    Hi

Thanks! I didn't see that. Do you know exactly what it defrags at boot?

    Thanks

Thanks for the link, but when I click on it, nothing happens except for a command prompt window opening then closing is a second?

    Is it meant for XP?

    Thanks

You have to open Windows' Command Prompt and then run the file from there.

So it doesn't defrag the MFT?

Maybe not exactly what you are asking for, but remember that you can get 60 days of free off-line (and on-line) defragging by using the 30-day trials at PerfectDisk and Paragon Total Defrag.
Probably numerous other too; so maybe you could extend the free defragging indefinitely. I know the first two work well.

Really? I always thought it needed boot-time defrag.

    Thanks!
