Fox buys Tubi for $440 million as it attempts to join the streaming wars
With a focus on bringing sports and news to subscribers, not original content

Fox Corporation has acquired ad-supported streaming platform Tubi for $440 million, bringing more than 20,000 movies and shows to the platform.

Tubi, which partners with top-tier studios and networks to provide people with thousands of films and TV shows, currently has 25 million users. Fox Corporation, which is separate from 21st Century Fox (the part of the company Disney acquired in 2019 for $73 billion), doesn’t have its own popular streaming platform.

“Tubi will immediately expand our direct-to-consumer audience and capabilities and will provide our advertising partners with more opportunities to reach audiences at scale,” Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch said in a press release.

An interesting tidbit within the acquisition: Fox primarily used the sale of its stake in Roku, another massive company within the world of free ad-supported streaming, to purchase Tubi.

Fox plans to continue running Tubi as an independent service, according to the press release, meaning it won’t come with a new Fox name. Still, Fox will use Tubi to offer a large number of its older TV shows and movies for free to subscribers.
Tubi is not going to suddenly get into the originals business. Essentially, don’t think of it as a competitor to Disney Plus, Netflix, Apple TV Plus, or Hulu.

Fox on Monday said it has completed its acquisition of Tubi, a free video-streaming service, for around $440 million. The companies announced the acquisition last month.

Tubi is an ad-supported video streaming site with over 20,000 movies and TV shows. It works with more than 250 content partners, including Warner Bros. and Lionsgate. In February, the service said its monthly active users hit 25 million in December.
Fox has said it plans to keep running Tubi as an independent service.

Fox Entertainment’s Tubi is upping its free-streaming game in Latin America, set to launch in five countries in the region later this month.

Tubi is set to launch its free, ad-supported streaming service in Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala and Panama, joining its current offering in Mexico (where the AVOD platform debuted in 2020).

In Mexico, Tubi has seen total viewing time increase 60% and total viewers grow 40% year-over-year. Tubi serves as the free streaming home in Mexico for titles from TV Azteca, one of the world’s largest producers of Spanish-language content.

“We’re delighted to launch our platform in these five Latin American countries, bringing viewers a mix of locally-produced content, Spanish-language favorites and Hollywood titles,” Tubi chief content officer Adam Lewinson said. “We’re eager to expand deeper into Latin America after the stellar success of Tubi in Mexico, which has seen tremendous growth in such a short amount of time.”

Tubi is available on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV as well as Google TV and other Android TV OS devices, in addition to LG TVs, Samsung TVs, Microsoft Store on Windows, VIDAA Smart OS on Hisense TVs, as well as Amazon Fire TV Stick devices and Roku TV and players in select countries. Tubi also is available to stream on the web.

In the U.S., Tubi offers free access to more than 40,000 movies and TV shows plus more than 150 local and live news, sports and entertainment channels. Fox Corp. acquired Tubi in 2020 for $440 million.

And when will they come to Europe? Seriously it's so annoying that Freevee and Tubi still haven't launched in Holland. From what I understood they are the least annoying free streaming services, but I'm still no fan of the stupid ads. They annoy the hell out of me on Plex and YouTube.
