Taking advantage of another person's work and not paying for it is called exploitation, worst than stealing. You can repeat all the typical Parasite Bay excuses as much as you want but that doesn't change the fact.

Well, my opinion is that if the user actually has the keygen, because he/she went after it, then it's a very much wanted program. :argh: Not a PUP. :D

A PUP would be what avast! free bundles with it. No attack against avast! meant, just to show that if keygens are going to be seen as PUP, then avast!/others should also classify themselves as PUP. :D

    -edit-

Like another user mentioned, if it's malicious, then flag it as such, otherwise don't spread fear to unsuspected users.

There are also valid reasons for someone to use a keygen/patch for some application. I remember some mentioned, I think at some other thread a while back, that they had to use such means to use older games or something like that. Another reason would be to trial an application that the developer decided to make the trial/demo/shareware so crippled, that the person who wants to trial the application can't even fully test it and make a decision about whether or not to purchase later.

There are many developers that don't make testing their apps a fair game either. They make available way too crippled trial versions and they expect you to pay for the app, just like that? Some developers get what they deserve, IMHO.

Because of what exactly? The Google Chrome it bundles with? Google Toolbar? You can clearly deselect that during installation... its what you cannot deselect that is really the problem...

5 times more likely! And if the likelihood for you was zero, the number still stands. 5 times zero is... :D

Whether or not you can deselect, it's not the point, at all. And, not even at discussion.

The point is: If something is malicious, flag it. If something is installed, because it may have been installed through some other installer, like some toolbar, and the user didn't notice it, flag it as PUP. Keygens/patches, I don't see how they would fit under PUP.

What kind of warning would be given to the user? Hey, you got a keygen that may be potentially harmful! or Hey, you got a keygen that may create potentially instability to your system! o_O :argh:

If wanted to pay for your software, but find out I could get it for free, so I pirate it, then you could argue piracy resulted in a potential loss of revenue.

If I didn't want to pay for your software, but decided to give it a shot because it's available for free, then you can't argue piracy resulted in a loss of revenue, because, was piracy not an option, I would not have purchased your product anyway.

This is called simple logic, which understandably goes against your "moral" values that are designed to keep stupid people in check.

I wonder how did they calculate that? Do the malware builders call Microsoft servers with the message "Hey, morons, we just infected another Windows system!" every time they infect a computer without an antivirus?

LOL. "Understand more". There's nothing to understand from that article. It just says that a report is saying that without AV you're in "big danger". I think they say that every day.

thank you - read and understood. regrettably MS only wrote about their software (and a bit about adobe). and based on facts windows defender had the worst results in latest av-test ;)

And even then, Defender detected 98-99% of widespread malware and 81-82% of 0-day malware, which further shows that they're blowing everything way out of proportion.

There are online and offline solutions which people without realtime antivirus protection can use to scan their computers every now and then.

There's much more in the referenced 120 pages report.

Sadly, people don't usually make use of these. They pay for others to repair their computers or even buy a new one.

Also, as Microsoft said in another article, prevention is better than cure.
