Robotics generally have seen an increase in interest during the pandemic, so it makes perfect sense that investors are taking a closer look at autonomous drone delivery. That’s good news for Volansi, which just announced a $50 million Series B.

Volansi (nee Volans-i) has been demonstrating its drones’ long-range capabilities for some time now. We wrote about them back in 2017, when they showed off a 100-mile flight — an impressive feat given the restrictions of most traditional drones.
A key application here is the delivery of medical supplies. The drones middle-mile drones are capable of traversing terrain that might be difficult or impossible to travel through more traditional ground methods.

Air taxi firm Volocopter teams up with Schenker to deploy heavy-lift drones

German aviation startup Volocopter has teamed up with logistics group DB Schenker to deploy its heavy-lift drones, in a project that will gather vital practical flying experience before its air taxis enter service.

The remote-controlled drone can lift a load of up to 200 kilograms (440 lb) and has a range of 40 kilometres (25 miles), making it ideal for jobs such as delivering medicines to a hospital or dropping off components at a factory.

"The logistics opportunity in the urban market is just as big as the passenger market," Volocopter CEO Florian Reuter said in an interview.
And, while e-commerce giant Amazon and others have received U.S. approval to test drone deliveries to customers, the Volocopter-Schenker partnership is aimed at business-to-business.

The Walmart drones just keep coming.

Over the past few weeks, Walmart has announced drone delivery trials for health and wellness products, as well as groceries with Flytrex and Zipline. Now, the company has started delivering COVID-19 self-collection kits by drone, too.
Starting Tuesday, customers in the North Las Vegas area will be able to order and receive kits dropped off by DroneUp-powered drones. Then, next month as the trial service continues, those drones will also start delivering kits to customers in Cheektowaga, New York (near Buffalo).

According to Walmart, those two locations were selected based on housing "density and location of households in close proximity to a Walmart store."

The start-up project can help free up healthcare staff, avoid courier waiting times and minimize the risk of virus transmission, authorities said Saturday.

Drone startup Volansi says it’s partnering with Merck to deliver “cold-chain” medicines (i.e., medicines that must be kept below certain temperatures) to rural parts of North Carolina. In the near future, Volansi drones will deliver medicines from Merck’s Wilson, North Carolina-based manufacturing site to the Vidant Healthplex in nearby Wilson.

Drones and autonomous vehicles can limit unnecessary contact between workers, couriers, clinicians, patients, and customers, potentially helping prevent the spread of infection. For these and other reasons, the number of drones dedicated to deliveries is expected to increase to millions of units by 2025, according to a Frost and Sullivan report.

200 Drones Perform a Choreographed Lip Sync in VWLS' Latest Music Video

The Detroit, Michigan-based animation studio teamed up with Firefly Drone Shows to produce the latest music video from VWLS, “High in Heaven,” which is performed and shot entirely by a fleet of 200 remote-controlled flying devices.

Alabama State U. 'first' to use drones for disinfecting stadiums

As part of its efforts to prevent attendees of sporting events from contracting COVID-19, Alabama State University claimed this month it will become the first university to use drones to disinfect its stadiums and arenas.

The drones, made by Draganfly, will spray down seats and other surfaces in ASU’s football stadium with a non-toxic, organic sanitizer from Varigard. According to Varigard, its formula lasts for more than two hours and can “trap and kill” pathogens, including coronaviruses.

“The proof is in the pudding. We show and prove that this technology it works and it’s something that everyone should consider, and I think that the sooner that all of them embrace using this new technology, the quicker we get to some sense of normalcy.”
ASU leaders said at the event they hope to deploy the drones for regular use at sporting events within the next few weeks.

Originally reported early in December, a drone pilot was hit with a set of fines from the FAA for over $182,000, penalties that he could have avoided if he heeded prior FAA warnings.

Drone law specialist Jonathan Rupprecht looked at the details of the case out of curiosity, as the magnitude of the fines is much higher than what is normal for a private citizen. In an interview with DPReview, Rupprecht says that this was the second-largest proposed fine that he was aware of.

“Drone flyers need to realize that flying a drone is a regulated activity and there are consequences. While a fine might not deter some, laws have been passed in recent years which can send you to federal prison for operating in an unsafe way near airports or aircraft,” Rupprecht said to DPReview.

Detailed on his blog, Rupprecht looked into the case. What he found was, despite the pilot’s insistence that he did not know he was in violation of the many rules he broke, the reality is much different.

“The FAA didn’t come out swinging right away,” Rupprecht says, citing three examples of warnings that the FAA sent to the pilot. “So three strikes and he gets taken out.”

On Monday, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued rules that will allow small drones to fly over people and at night in the United States and mandate remote identification technology for nearly all drones.
The rules eliminate requirements that drones, known formally as unmanned aerial vehicles, be connected to the internet to transmit location data but requires them to broadcast remote ID messages via radio frequency broadcast.

“This approach creates barriers to compliance and will have unintended negative privacy impacts for businesses and consumers,” Wing said Thursday in a blog post, adding “an observer tracking a drone can infer sensitive information about specific users, including where they visit, spend time, and live and where customers receive packages from and when.”

Sony unveiled its first done, the Airpeak. It can carry a full frame Sony Alpha mirrorless camera and is in the smallest drone that can do so. It is “capable of dynamic filming and precise, stable flight”, though details are scarce beyond that.

The Airpeak drone has a front-facing camera and a distance sensor, which with the power of AI will (presumably) be used for target tracking and obstacle avoidance. Sony is really keeping its cards close to its vest, we don’t even have details on range and flight time yet.
It’s not clear how much it will cost, but it certainly won’t be cheap, as it's clearly aimed at professional users. You can keep an eye on this page for new developments.

A California man is facing jail time for hitting a police helicopter with his drone. Andrew Hernandez pleaded guilty yesterday to unsafe operation of an unmanned aircraft, a charge that carries up to one year in federal prison and a potential fine of up to $250,000.

According to a plea agreement, Hernandez launched a small drone to see a crime scene near his Hollywood home in September. The drone flew into the path of a police helicopter that was responding to a burglary, hitting its fuselage and forcing an emergency landing.
Hernandez was charged in November after police identified him via the drone’s memory card. He will be sentenced on April 12th.

Following in the footsteps of the Swiss Post, the UK's Royal Mail is the latest postal service to trial drone flights. The company has announced a landmark project to deliver packages — including personal protective equipment, COVID testing kits and assorted mail — to a UK island using an autonomous Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV).

According to the Royal Mail, the drones will be flown out of sight of any operator during the entire 70-mile journey. The month-long trial is being conducted with a group of partners including the University of Southampton and drone companies Windracers, Skyports and Consortiq, among others.

A team of researchers from Germany’s Fraunhofer FKIE institute has created a drone that can locate screaming humans. While it sounds like the stuff of dystopian fiction, it’s actually something they set out to create to make it easier for first responders to find survivors following a natural disaster.

“(Drones) can cover a larger area in a shorter period of time than rescuers or trained dogs on the ground,” Macarena Varela, one of the lead engineers on the project, told The Washington Post. “If there’s a collapsed building, it can alert and assist rescuers. It can go places they can’t fly to or get to themselves.”
Varela told The Post the Fraunhofer FKIE team conducted several successful open field tests in which their drone managed to estimate someone’s location “within a few seconds” of picking up the sounds they were making.
