@guest, Oh right, that makes a lot of sense. I used to use K-Meleon a lot myself, as I said. I have had a look at some reviews of the new Norton AV. It looks pretty impressive, unfortunately I have had some bad experiences in the past with Norton & I'm a tad nervy about testing anything from Satantec Symentec LOL! However, I believe the Norton firewall is excellent though. My smaller laptop once ran Norton, I've had Bullguard, McAfee, the Panda Cloud & finally MSE on it. It is a Belnea o.book & only has a Gig of RAM. It just about runs Vista HP. I honestly thought that the hugely bloated McAfee ran better than Norton, & I had virtually no problems with McAfee the 14 months or so that I ran it. I also got hugely trolled on many sites just admitting that I used McAfee (it is free with my ISP). I thought it had a pretty good firewall though. Eventually a combination of a DAT update & an MS update fragged Google Chrome as I was trying to open it as the updates came through. It was OK after a fresh install but those McUpdates every time I opened the laptop were starting to get to me. I am a firm believer in not fixing something that is working, & trying to remove Norton from computers in the past was a bit like root canal work without anaesthetic, so until that day I'd left McPain-in-the-arse to just do its job. Fortunately (with a little help from the McUninstall tool) it removed itself swiftly. It's a great shame that Panda didn't work out (too many false-positives) as it is VERY light. MSE is pretty close though, close enough for me anyway. It enables me to run this smaller & slightly underpowered laptop with aeroglass & a few other RAM wasting things without slowing me up too much.
Yeah, I'm also one of the many who had numerous issues with Symantec products in the past, in my case I remember with special disgust of uninstallation issues with NAV 2005. However, latest Norton products versions have been improving a lot in pretty much every area, as specialized tests show. About firewalls with outbound network traffic inspection that also mix HIPS capabilities in them (and other proactive protection capabilities), I'm of the opinion that these solutions: - require too much time for configurations, and may bring confusion when the included white list isn't good enough; - may bring several compatibility/performance issues; - most of them aren't perfectly secure, i.e. malware can bypass them in some way still not covered by the implementation - although this has been improving in recent years - apart from possible security vulnerabilities. That being said, when I tested NIS2011, its firewall was completely unobtrusive. ((although this may have a bad side, Matousec tests using the open-source Security Software Testing Suite (SSTS) proved that NIS2010 proactive protection capabilities could be bypassed with many different techniques; some new things were introduced in the NIS2011 version but I don't think its Matousec scores will change drastically)) What I also liked in NIS2011: - the exploit/vulnerability protection, that guards apps with known security vulnerabilities; - and the reputation based security that really improves Norton detection rates a lot.
Lol, Norton, and Comodo have not been getting along. Lets hope their software gets along better than their company reps.
1. Router/SPI Firewall 2. Windows 7 Firewall (Using) 3. Norton Internet Security 2011 Firewall 4. PrivateFirewall 5. Online Armor (Free/Paid)
Norton ISS comes with a firewall freebie from comcast, but really windows is all I think I need so on most of my machines that is all I use. That would be for Vista and 7, XP machine has the Norton one. I do hold a lifetime license to Outpost but it is currently not in use.
As of now.... Windows XP built-in Firewall w/ no exceptions + DefenseWall Personal Firewall I was still in searched for the affordable router that I can use for my wireless usb modem kit...but the telecom company here announces already that they've released the modem + router combo in one so maybe I'll bite it if I have spare money.
Eset Smart Security FTW. I just install it and it does everything automatically for me unlike other annoying firewalls I have tried that keep asking me to allow or deny a connection for the most basic tasks.
