I wonder if this should be a separate thread but, I would like to get the reaction of Firefox users.

How many folks have a CPU usage monitor always "on top". I have one on the top of my screen. I find that editing custom Styles (via Stylish) can significantly affect CPU usage. I posted on the userstyles.org forum but nobody has confirmed/denied this.

The other related observation, a bit rough at the moment, is that different styles can result in differing CPU usage which is quite logical.

(I prefer watching CPU usage over that of RAM because I don't keep my browser open for long periods.)

Sure. So you haven't installed any add-on?

No, look at lucidream's post, thread post, and the others. I'm specifically asking for list of customizations, not version number.

    Probably.

I have mine on another monitor, or tray. Well, maybe another reason for me not to.

    I love that skin/theme, I've seen a K-Meleon version of it. I can't remember what it's called though.

Originally, I've added LinkChecker, because I couldn't find a good bookmarklet and userscript. Turn out I forgot to just look for online services that does such things already, without putting stuff on your browser. So it's removed.

Added Google docs viewer userscript, because it rocks. Better than the extension. Removed Google - Disable preview, because I like it now.

Also switched from DuckDuckGo to ixquick, because of more features.

Removed TOCMonkey after finding out it was causing xml files to display without formatting.

LinkExtend is becoming too outdated, none of its thumbnails work, Google search results not rated anymore, shortcut keys not working, still no blocking, etc.
Therefore, I've decided to fallback to WOT, which does include some sources other than its mob, and has no problems other than false positives.

Added Perspectives for extra HTTPS validation, which is probably the weakest link in my security. Also like how it corrects Firefox errors.
Only issue was the "permanent" statusbar icon, which I hid with Statusbar: Mouseover for clutter.

Decided to use NoScript and Perspectives on netbook as well. This time its in whitelist mode, because I want to save resources.

On the netbook, I've replaced Mozilla Labs: Prospector - LessChrome HD with Autohide Bookmarks Toolbar (Customizeable), because it looks better, works more efficiently, and is customizable.

Same .xml plain text page issue with Text to Link. Switched back to Linkify Plus, although I liked the other's code a bit better.

Removed Fenopy search plugin due to lack of use. Added URLVoid with Antivirus Engines search plugin, because it provides different analysis.

Got ever better userscripts, LongURL and View with Google Document Viewer.

I have always disliked Gecko-engined browsers slow scrolling compared to other contemporary browsers, especially on a laptop. However, I have been experimenting with SmoothWheel (albeit originally in SeaMonkey) & I am quite impressed. It can be downloaded from here for Firefox as well. I know this has been around for a while but it's new to me.

Does it offer a better experience than the built in smooth scrolling setting?

Well yes it does, what I like about it though is that I can vary the speed of the scrolling itself. For instance; you can alter the step & speed size & even hold Alt & Shift keys in combination with scrolling to alter speed. It has plenty of advanced features as well, but I haven't really experimented with them yet. I think it is more useful on a laptop environment when you relying on the up/down keys. The only slight problem I've noticed on Firefox is that on a laptop, with SmoothWheel activated to work with the up/down keys, when you utilise a reader & activate it on a page you can only scroll with the mouse pointer or the PgUp & PgDn keys as the up/down won't work in a reader. I really need to spend more time playing with SmoothWheel to see just what it can do. I'm impressed with it so far.

Has anyone used RequestPolicy 0.5.23? It's supposed to compliment NoScript.

"How does RequestPolicy help you where NoScript does not? RequestPolicy will protect you from various attacks that NoScript will not (such as CSRF attacks, though there some special cases that NoScript protects against) and will give you greater privacy while browsing.

Also, RequestPolicy will give you finer-grained control over JavaScript and plugins when you use it with NoScript. For example, if you whitelist a domain with NoScript to allow it to run JavaScript, then that domain will also be allowed to run JavaScript when you are on any other site that you have whitelisted with NoScript. RequestPolicy makes sure that when it is JavaScript from a third-party site, it will still be restricted unless you have allowed those cross-site requests." ~ FAQ

This Allow/Block thing drives an average Home User (Joe) crazy...
Not many ones can tolerate it...

Thanks for the finding, Dave. :thumb:
I will try it in my System though...;)

Yes, it can be a tad frustrating at times. o_O

I think once you have the whitelist sorted it's not so bad. I actually got so wound up at one stage I uninstalled it for a bit. But I thought that was being a bit defeatist, so it's back! ;)

In fact, it is quite educational about what scripts exactly are running on a page & genuinely seems to compliment NoScript. It's often discussed on the NoScript forums & seems to be able to 'fine tune' NoScript to some extent. Plus, it's also coded for SeaMonkey.

You're welcome. I suppose we'll have to trial it a bit & see how it goes. It could well end up being one of my standard Firefox/SeaMonkey defence layers.

Another about:config tweak relates to the appearance of the "modal" pop-up that appears in some contexts quite legitimately:
    one could try
    Code:
    prompts.tab_modal.enabled false
    instead of the default.

I often like to have a different theme on my portables (as compared to my usual theme) & as Kairo's LCARS is a bit buggy at the moment, I have really taken a shine to Simple Green by Sailfish. I like its Netscape Navigator 9 retro look.
