A quick note for Windows users:

If you're running real-time anti-malware of some kind, it could be hooking into the firefox process and causing all kinds of issues. With no resident anti-malware on Windows, my experience shows 30-40MB usage cold and about 70-80MB with 10-15 tabs, no memory leaks, instant launch and tab opening. This holds true for 2GB machines installed once with xp in 2005 and 2006.

It's how you use it. The smart choice of software can make wonders.

Just for fun, try without AV and see the difference.

How are you doing? Ignore this ?

In your Linux world do you use recovery images ever when things go wrong?

In Linux world are there ways of avoiding drive by malware from evil sites?

If I'm OT please put this post elsewhere, thanks.

    Hi there,

I'm doing fine. Not sure what to ignore ...

Avoid drive-bys in Linux is the same as Windows ... boring.

Recovery - only if I botch really bad, which I try to avoid anyhow ...

    Well good!

Drive by malware was not so boring for my son who went to a comic book site:argh: with no recovery images. Took him 3 days to bring his setup back and ALL his data was obsoleted. Yes he had a RT AV on it tagged it but he chose "ignore" that was another valuable lesson.

Now he has recovery images I set up for him. So far he has used those about half a dozen times! When he gets a message now he deletes but still recovers as he is gun shy!

    Sigh....

    Hi :)

    I Use This...
    Firefox Theme - Aeon Big : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/767
Been using it for about 12 months now.
Looks much nicer once installed

Tried a few other themes in the past.. Didn't like any of them :thumbd:

    However!
    1) Find Aeon Big is nice and clear without being too large.
    2) Always seems to be kept up to date .. In time for new versions of Firefox :thumb:
    3) Any buttons, icons etc.. Always seem to match well with this theme.

    Plus!
    Works well with..

firefox uses 50mb of hard disk space

maybe increase this value will make ff consume less ram

This doesn't have any immediate effect on ram usage, just when the cache is full Firefox will struggle to free some space to put newer cache files. This, however will speed up page loads because FF can cache more pages. I personally set it to use 500mb.

The installer will setup the schedule itself, but you can change the repeat interval in task scheduler. Default is 30 minutes.

    mantra,

    Could you do some tests?

Download Portable Firefox 3.6 from this page, extract it to Desktop -> FirefoxPortable1. Close all FF windows then go to FirefoxPortable1 folder and run FirefoxPortable.exe, add cooliris and see if it's still slow or ram usage is still high.

For testing other addons extract Portable Firefox to FirefoxPortable2 and so on. This will narrow down the ram and speed problem.

Well, the portable version in my link is a different one than portableapps.com

But anyway, you can do either of these

backup your profile prior to use portable version
try the portable version on another windows installation
try it in shadow mode using returnil home free

I had my cache set for 50mb with the understanding that the cache would purge itself when it's full, and if I raised the amount, it would slow FF down once it got near full. I will take your advice and raise it up to 500mb and see what happens. Thanks for the advice.:)

Hi Escalader, How are you doing? What is the advantage to setting it that high? :)
