Firefox 14 beta

I just think that Mozilla, with these Fx releases are emulating the rapid Google Chrome release cycle, for some reason better known to themselves. Possibly to look industrious & 'with it'. I don't think that they are doing themselves any favours.

 

Well i don't necessarily think it's a bad thing but a release cycle of every 6 weeks is insane.

 

But look at this way ...
Every six weeks in a year, however long that may be:

• we get to make the same profound comments about how this browser is copying that browser
• we get to post links to ftp sites to download the latest and greatest before it's officially announced
• we get to say we'd rather wait for the release to be pushed to us
• we get to rubbish the new release and comment about just how buggy or glitchy or whatever it is
• we get to moan about the extensions that won't work with the new release
• we get to tell the world just how more wonderful our latest choice of browser is compared to the new release

♲ Now, isn't that wonderful

 

CentOS and Scientific Linux have adopted Mozillas ESR (extended support release cycle).

This seems more reasonable. I am still on Firefox 10x with SL6.2.

 

Can it also remember to always allow plugins for specific sites?

 

Yes, post #19 - that's the dialogue window that one gets when right clicking on a website page and selecting 'Edit Site Preferences'.
I am currently testing Opera 12 'next' which now offers out of process plugins, and hardware acceleration. I must still find out whether HWA applies to Linux as well.

If you want to test it and already have Opera 11.64 running, choose the 'next'
install option http://snapshot.opera.com/unix/next_12.00-1450/opera-next-12.00-1450.x86_64.linux.tar.xz which allows you to have side by side installs. It's the same as the RC, the RC will however overwrite an existing Opera install. Also remember that some bugs will undoubtedly be present as it is not a final version.

HWA for Linux, yes it is disabled by default but it's there.
To enable HWA:
opera:config#Enable%20Hardware%20Acceleration

opera:config#Enable%20WebGL

Set both above to 1 then save and restart Opera. Check status: opera:gpu

Getting ever so slightly back on-topic, I honestly think that extension incompatibilities due to the crazy 42 day release cycle are actually turning many people away from Firefox. After all, it is its extensions & customisation that makes Fx so popular to begin with. Maybe if enough people regularly moan & whinge Mozilla may start to take notice. Maybe not ...

 

A bug has to be reproducible under defined conditions.

 

Admittedly, but it may not always be so easy to define the conditions, nor easy to replicate them entirely. There can be many combinations of extensions, operating systems & the like. It doesn't mean that the bug doesn't necessarily exist. Changes to a browser at a rapid rate are not going to alleviate problems & are more likely to accelerate them.

 

Now that there's the ESR, people who are in need of stability could use that. Isn't that obvious?

 

You are right, they aren't helping themselves as far as I'm concerned.

In my next machine, I'm going to take a different route.

1) learn all the built in security, backup features of W7/W8 and deploy those. That means the 2 way FW the built in defrager, the policy tools.

2) maximize or harden the browser(s) I use to contain script, sites, refers etc.

3) Use free ASW and AV's to scan weekly

4) Maximize encryption

5) Put the os on SSD

6) Maximize the fw control in a new router

7) Separate ip black lists from AV or FW products

I will need a HIPS unless I can convince myself that sandboxie renders that not needed.

9) I will need a antikeylooger and use EMET

This means I no longer need to buy perfect disk defragger type tools, or any AV products.

Sounds like a good plan.

 

It can be a tad glitchy though sometimes. But thanks again Ocky for informing me about this in Opera, I wondered why there wasn't a decent flashblock in Opera extensions. It's one of those functions that once you've used it, you wonder how you surfed without it.

 

I tried Firefox 14 Beta 12 and it seems to crash randomly on diff. websites

 

It is great to be on the bleeding edge helping the vendors test!
