I kid you not! I came into my office this morning and my docking station and external DVD burner were swarming with fire ants. They were chewing away at all the soft foam and rubber parts! Good thing I wasn't gone longer!

Little bastards tried to eat me too!

(I found a dead mouse in a coumputer here once. Aweful stinking mess to clean.)

  2. I don't like ants either. I've heard that if you make a mixture of wet cat food, with grape jelly mixed with Boric Acid and place it around where the ants go they take it back to the queen and bye bye ants after that. Not exactly sure if it will work with fire ants, what do they eat? I know it works with most ants. You could give it a try though. It's safer than pesticides and helps keep the environment clean.

Never seen fire ants. I actually learnt that they sting today, I didn't know that there were ants that actually sting. We have so-called "fire ants" in Europe, but these don't sting, they are just regular ants though of red color. Even when I lived in the States, I don't think stinging ants existed there (around Washington DC).

They are definitely a menace here in Texas. They are out of control.

lol, I don't think 'sting' is the right word TNT, :gack: they burn like heck from what I've see on the news, and unfortunately the little mongrels have made their way to the Land of Oz.... generally in shipping containers from southern America I think they said they come from.

We had an outbreak in capital city of Queensland, Brisbane, a couple years back and council/state govt spent hundreds of thousands of dollars erradicating the buggers. dont' know what the story is regarding them lately.

Like bees, o_O if someone is allergic and gets bitten, then they can be in serious trouble according to allergy experts.

If you have fire ants eating your computer you need to reconfigure your fire wall.

They don't sting, they bite. But the bite stings or itches for a while. I had a few on my hand and watched them gnaw away. Tenaciuos little buggers. They put their whole body into it. My hand itched for a couple of minutes, but no red marks showed up.
No, of course not. You just commanded your minions to do your dirty work!

Now will Microsoft ever patch the ... umm ... bug!o_O

Hmm, looking at the pictures and seeing the description of this beast I found everywhere, it actually seem they do sting instead of biting: http://www2.dpi.qld.gov.au/fireants/

You're right, no wonder why they look like they are convulsing when they bite. Here is a better article:

    http://www.emedicine.com/derm/byname/fire-ant-bites.htm

Apparently they do have a stinger in the abdomen, but they rotate around their mandibles making a circular sting. They never cause me any welts, but mosquitos don't either, not on me.

We don't have fire ants here in Adelaide but we do have bull ants and those nasty little bastards have a penchant for biting any part of your body they crawl onto.

Come to think of it, any other fellow Australians that visit this forum know that we have lots of things here that like to bite you.

rule to live by.....be careful not to sit on a fire ant mound. and, as far as them attacking your computer, if you stop using the cd tray to hold your sugar laden sodas then they wont be attracted to it...haha.
