AlternativeTo is a website which lists similar programs to a given program. The database isn't extensive - approximately 1100 entries by my calculations - but then again the site is less than a year old.

Thank you :). Wakoopa shows similar software for some items, and for others it does not. By the way, one can find Wakoopa's categories at http://wakoopa.com/categories.

I knew about http://software.informer.com previously, but I didn't list it here because I don't like how it handles tags. For example, let's consider the program PDFCreator. Three tags for PDFCreator are listed at http://pdfcreator.software.informer.com/: 'Doc2pdf', 'Save as PDF', and 'Xls2pdf'. But if you look at what's listed for tag 'Create PDF Documents', you'll find PDFCreator listed. Why isn't this tag shown in PDFCreator's tag cloud?

A nice feature of both of these sites is that you can discover how many people are actually using given software, instead of how many downloaded it, as you would find at most download sites. A note of caution though: the results from these two sites can sometimes be quite different. Example, compare http://wakoopa.com/categories/security/ with http://security-privacy.software.informer.com/

I've noticed that if you have configured Wakoopa to show you software from more than one source (Windows, Mac, Linux, Web), only one of the selected sources will actually be used when listing the most popular software in a category. This is especially important, given that two sources (Windows and Web) are selected by default, at least in my case. IMHO, this is confusing, and I hope that Wakoopa changes this behavior.
