Ok:-some AV's will not do as well as expected, and users/fans will make excuses for them! and some AV's will do as well or better than expected and users/fans will gloat about it! How's that for a prediction(lol)

    Steve1955,

Prediction = in the future, you're just repeating the past history, oh.., OK, I guess we can expect history to repeat itself in this case :)

    Cheers,

    Blue

PS - my prediction is that there will be results, and all too much will be read into the extremely fine differences and distinctions. Now if the folks reading these tests would just listen to IBK for a moment.....

I do believe that IBK's test is more than just fine.

Like many numerical results in many contexts, people tend to believe them to the level of significant figures shown. They fail to appreciate that the "accuracy" of any test is not necessarily tied to the "precision" of the measurement. This is true in measurements on physical systems and in tests of AV performance. AV tests also have the added complication that both the test subject and test bed are fluid entities.

IBK does try to moderate this tendency by providing a scoring metric based on broad categories (STANDARD, ADVANCED, ADVANCED+). I think even he'd allow that this is an incomplete picture, although probably the best one that can be provided without taking account of an individual readers situation and hardware. If only people would take some of the salient points made by IBK in his FAQ to heart, I might be a little less cynical. However, my view is not of the test itself, but of the reader reactions to the results of the test.

Any AV that achieves the "STANDARD" mark is already very good. If those engines also owns other certifications you can be sure that is good.

Go to av-test.org/index and at the top you will see that Andreas Marx is listed at the top of the list.

He does the pcwelt.de/news/sicherheit tests that you will also see discussed on this board.

    AV Comparatives February Predictions

For the On Demand tests. I have been hanging out alot at the sites most verify detections at to check for accuracy or FPs. From what I see up till today here are my predictions.

This group will look very strong, not ranked in any order.
    Avira
    Bitdefender
    Dr Web
    Kaspersky
    F Secure
    Nod32

The ones still not showing me much are,
    Avast
    Avg
    F-Prot
    Norman
    Fortinet
    Virusbuster
    ArcaVir

    Re: AV Comparatives February Predictions

id like to see drweb bump up to advanced, i will be happy then.

advanced+ will only be a bonus.

the others im intersted in are AVG, F-PROT and FORTINET.

not including the multi-engines, i see something like this:

    1. Avira
    2. Kaspersky
    3. Symantec
    4. Bitdefender
    5. NOD32
    6. AVG
    7. Dr.Web

sure, ive put dr.web at 7, but all are very good still in my opinion.

all above 90 percents, my prediction.

Dr Web and Avira are really hitting the hueristics of late so FPs are going to be high. Nod is looking better at trojan detection but still not as high as it could be. Bitdefender is the one that may be a shocker when it is all said and done.

Its funny, you can see the ones that are detected based on hueristics just by who finds them. Kas and F Secure are always left out of those, but when Kas get this ability, heaven help us. Also when it comes to trojan detection, the best 3 are Kas, F Secure and Bitdefender. With Avira and Dr Web very, very close.

End of Feb, I think. Dr Web has really gotten strong. It and Bitdefender are really coming on.

    1st March.

btw, all companies (eccept 2) miss now less than 8tousands from last test. So when the test starts, they are pratically all more or less equal and we will see how good they are against the stuff that was added during the last 6 months.

the test set will include over 1 million samples (if dialers, pup, polys and dos viruses are counted); in any case the windows malware (main test-set) will be a half million more or less i think.

i wouldnt say dr.web is strong, seems the same to me.

what dr.web offer though, is a very very good detection overall, if you include:

    Mass-mailing worms
    E-mail viruses
    Peer-to-peer viruses
    Internet worms
    File viruses
    Trojans
    Stealth viruses
    Polymorphic viruses
    Bodiless viruses
    Macro viruses
    MS Office viruses
    Malicious scripts

    Script viruses
    Spyware
    Spybots
    Password stealers
    Paid Dialers
    Adware
    Riskware
    Hacktools
    Backdoors
    Joke programs
    Rootkits
    Other malware

i think, if there was a test with all these included, dr.web would score well, its not the greatest of detections but as long as they keep improving, i will be a happy customer, i think dr.web offers a nice overall protection for users wanting to be safe on the internet, at a great price.

cool, IBK... i knew you would have your eye on this thread.

1st march is soooo far off. damn.

IBK, the stuff I have been watching is what has been submitted for detection results in the last 3 months. And I watch it alot. It will be fun.

I think Avast will be 6th on the list, but maybe we are shorting McAfee. It may very well be next after NOD.

Ten bits says AVG performs better than BitDefender 10. Get the pun? I do at least hope AVG does better than Avast this time with all it's improvements.

Well, avast! team is not just sitting there, doing nothing... And they managed to keep quiet decent detection track (ADVANCED) so far. Don't underestimate them yet :p

You haven't been paying attention If you include F-Prot under this heading. IBK did a special test on the new F-Prot comparing it to the older one and it did quite well. ;)

No love for Dr Web? Well then I guess we'll have to see what detection improvements version 5 brings. They are not going to be using the beta version (4.33.3) are they?
