Facebook’s Workplace, its Slack-like collaboration and chat tool targeted at businesses, now has more than 5 million paid users, up from 3 million in October, Facebook announced today. That growth in users is due in large part to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has required many people to rely more on software tools while working from home.

Many collaboration apps have also seen growth since the pandemic. In March, Slack said that it had surpassed more than 12.5 million concurrent users, for example, and Microsoft Teams hit 75 million daily active users in April, a jump of 70 percent since the month before.

There are also new features that will roll out for Workplace, including a videoconferencing service called Workplace Rooms, automatic live captioning in six languages for Workplace Live video, and the ability to use the Portal TV for Workplace video calls.

Facebook said Thursday that a work version of the social network that companies pay for now has more than 2 million users.

Facebook offers Workplace for free, but it also has a premium, paid version that includes more features such as administrative controls, monitoring tools for IT teams and integration with other tools such as G Suite and Okta. It costs $3 per active user per month.

Big companies are willing to give Facebook’s Workplace a shot (October 10, 2019)

On Tuesday, Facebook held a conference called Flow at a hotel near its Menlo Park, California, headquarters. The event celebrated the company’s Workplace business collaboration service, and among the pieces of news was a new usage stat: Workplace now has three million paying customers, a figure that doesn’t count nonprofit customers who can use the service for free.

Facebook said that Workplace’s three million customers are up from two million in February, a 50% jump in eight months.

Facebook has signed up enough large, well-known customers to prove that there’s a market for Workplace. Focusing on big companies outside the tech bubble—rather than doing battle with Slack for the hearts and minds of knowledge workers—seems as smart an approach as any. And judging from the service’s growth in 2019, it has some traction.

Facebook Pitched New Tool Allowing Employers to Suppress Words Like “Unionize” in Workplace Chat Product

During an internal presentation at Facebook on Wednesday, the company debuted features for Facebook Workplace, an intranet-style chat and office collaboration product similar to Slack.

The presentation discussed the “benefits” of “content control.” And it offered one example of a topic employers might find it useful to blacklist: the word “unionize.”
The suggestion that Facebook is actively building tools designed to suppress labor organizing quickly caused a stir at the Menlo Park, California-based company.

Anand apologized for the “unionize” example, noting that “censoring users is not the purpose of this feature and Workplace’s ambition is to give everyone a voice, while maintaining a respectful work environment.”

The partnership between Meta and Microsoft brings together two rivals that compete in the enterprise communication software market. Workplace and Teams, however, do not have complete overlap. Whereas Workplace is focused on broad, companywide connections, Teams is focused on instantaneous communication between workers and their direct colleagues.

“The way our customers end up using it is customers use the complementary features, not the competing features,” Singh said. “There are customers that are just Workplace shops, and then there are customers that are just Teams shops. This is really for those customers that use both.”
