Facebook, the world’s largest social media platform, acknowledges the need to do more to help its users stay protected and keep their accounts away from the hands of hackers. So it’s planning to add support for hardware security keys.

These are basically USB sticks that generate and hold a cryptographic element (private key), which is meant to help users authenticate and connect to their online accounts. Having set up your account using such a key, it is only possible to access it on computers with the physical device plugged in, so it’s the ultimate level of protection.

To be precise, Facebook has already been offering this security option, but only for high-profile politicians and high-ranking officials, government agents, election staff [...] But the platform has now decided that this protection option shouldn’t be exclusive to some but available to all, as each person’s account could be invaluable to them, and every user is important to their social circle.

The social media giant hasn’t been specific with the arrival of the new option, so there are no dates, but it confirmed that it’s going to happen within 2021.

I don't see what is new after reading the article linked above. I have been using U2F for years now on Facebook. One thing Facebook mentioned is the dreaded lockout because someone loses their Yubikey (or similar stick) and without it they have NO access. That is true, except that Yubi's are now super cheap and Facebook lets you setup/authorize multiple keys for your account. Just leave one at home in a safe place and only use that specific stick in an emergency. I use 5 including NFC enabled for mobile applications. Solid security.

Facebook Protect, a security monitoring platform offered to political officials during the 2020 US elections, will be offered to more people in 2021. Axios reports that the company’s head of security policy, Nate Gleicher, says that Protect will be offered to journalists, human rights advocates and activists. This will include real-time monitoring for political accounts related to overseas elections to watch for hack attempts.

In addition, Facebook will hand out physical security keys to notable figures to help them enable two-factor authentication.
And these hardware keys will also be available for regular Facebook users to buy, which they can then register to their accounts online.

Meta Expands Facebook Protect Program to Activists, Journalists, Government Officials

Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, on Thursday announced an expansion of its Facebook Protect security program to include human rights defenders, activists, journalists, and government officials who are more likely to be targeted by bad actors across its social media platforms.

"These people are at the center of critical communities for public debate," said Nathaniel Gleicher, head of security policy at Meta. "They enable democratic elections, hold governments and organizations accountable, and defend human rights around the world. Unfortunately this also means that they are highly targeted by bad actors."

Facebook Protect, currently being launched globally in phases, enables users who enroll for the initiative to adopt stronger account security protections, like two-factor authentication (2FA), and watch out for potential hacking threats. Meta said more than 1.5 million accounts have enabled Facebook Protect to date, of which nearly 950,000 accounts turned on 2FA since it began widely rolling out the feature in September 2021.

People who may be eligible for Facebook Protect are expected to be notified via a prompt on Facebook, along with an option to turn on the advanced security features as well as identify any potential issues — e.g., lack of a strong password — that could be abused to gain access to the accounts.

Thanks for the feedback. I think it's indeed important to buy multiple keys, also for relatives who might need access to your accounts in case something happens.
