Facebook’s latest meddling disclosure: “We expected the organization to evolve”

Facebook took the unusual step of announcing an ongoing, incomplete investigation into "inauthentic" behavior on Tuesday, complete with implications that Russia's Internet Research Agency (IRA) may have been involved. This week's disclosure comes in part due to Facebook having to reveal its hand a bit prematurely: "32 Pages and accounts" were affiliated with a protest event scheduled for next week in Washington, DC, and Facebook has begun informing its potential attendees.

The 3,000+ users who expressed interest in the "No Unite The Right 2" event between August 10-12 in Washington, DC, will receive the following Facebook message today: "A Page created by fake accounts started the event 'No Unite The Right 2 - DC.' The other event hosts have been notified."

Facebook shuts off access to user data for hundreds of thousands of apps
All app makers who did not submit to the company’s review process by its August 1st deadline are being cut off

Facebook this evening announced that it’s shutting off access to its application programming interface, the developer platform that lets app makers access user data, for hundreds of thousands of inactive apps.

The goal is to ensure third-party software on Facebook was in line with the company’s data privacy rules and new restrictions put in place in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which a third-party developer siphoned user data and sold it to another firm in violation of Facebook’s terms of service

[...] “Where we need more information, developers will have a limited amount of time to respond. If we don’t hear back within that timeframe, we will remove the app’s access to APIs that require approval.”
Facebook says developers will not lose their API access while their app is in the queue for review, or while Facebook is in the process of reviewing the app, so long as the software complies with its revised policies.

Facebook’s chief security officer, Alex Stamos, said today that he’ll be leaving the company later this month. The announcement comes just a day after Facebook — and to a large extent, Stamos — revealed that Facebook had discovered malicious actors who continue to use the platform to manipulate political discussions and organizing in the United States.

Stamos won’t be replaced after he leaves, meaning no one will hold the title of “chief security officer” at Facebook.

Instead of building out a dedicated security team, Facebook has dissolved it and is instead embedding security engineers within its other divisions. [...] Facebook will “continue to evaluate what kind of structure works best” to protect users’ security, he said.
“We expect to be judged on what we do to protect people’s security, not whether we have someone with a certain title,” a spokesperson said

Facebook suspended 400 and banned one of the thousands of apps it's investigated since the Cambridge Analytica data sharing scandal began in March, the company said Thursday.

The company issued a full ban to myPersonality, one of the apps at the center of the scandal, on Wednesday after it didn't agree to a request for audit. The social media suspended the app back in April.

"It's clear that they shared information with researchers as well as companies with only limited protections in place," Facebook wrote in a blog post.

Joseph Chancellor worked at Facebook as a social psychology researcher. He was hired after co-directing Global Science Research, the company that used a personality-quiz app to obtain information from Facebook on up to 85 million Americans. GSR then improperly shared that data with Cambridge Analytica, a firm that later worked for Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign for U.S. president

“He’s no longer employed by Facebook and we wish him well," said Andy Stone, a spokesman. The New Yorker earlier reported his departure.

Yesterday, members of the European Parliament (MEPs) agreed on a resolution to “urge Facebook to allow EU bodies to carry out a full audit to assess data protection and security of users’ personal data.”

MEPs urge Facebook to allow EU bodies carry out an audit. The reason for this wording is that, weirdly, the EU can’t subject Facebook to an audit without the company‘s consent.
TNW spoke with Iina Lietzén, an EU press officer, who confirmed this interpretation: “An audit on Facebook by EU agencies would require the consent by Facebook, which is what the Parliament is calling for in the resolution.”

It means that Facebook could simply say ‘no’ and there wouldn’t be an audit.

Facebook considered charging companies for access to user data several years ago, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday, citing internal Facebook emails in an unredacted court document.

Monetizing its user data would mark a dramatic about-face of the social media giant's longstanding policy of not selling that information.
The emails are reportedly included in a cache of internal Facebook documents seized recently by a representative of the UK Parliament.

Damian Collins, who heads Parliament's Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee, said during a hearing Tuesday that the UK government might release documents "within the next week."
