Facebook is the latest Silicon Valley juggernaut to jump into video game streaming.
Facebook isn’t targeting Stadia (Google), xCloud (Microsoft), Luna (Amazon) or GeForce Now (NVIDIA). Not at first, anyway.

Instead of console and PC titles, the company is offering smaller free-to-play games.

You’ll find these titles in the Gaming section of Facebook. (That’s the one that also contains its Twitch rival.) The company has emphasized that it’s not launching a standalone service and, because it’s part of the standard Facebook service, will be completely free to access. Unless you want to spend money inside the individual games, of course.

In addition, Facebook will be introducing “cloud playable ads” in the News Feed.
These tiny demos will target people who rarely open the Gaming tab, or have forgotten that Facebook also offers playable games.

Cloud gaming will be limited to two platforms: Android and the web.
The service will eventually come to the dedicated Facebook Gaming app on Android. While the company is focused on mobile hardware and the web, it hasn’t ruled out supporting TVs someday.

“I would love to be on TVs at some point,” Rubin told Engadget. “I think that would-be a great way to play these games. But there’s a big controller issue for us because we’re not giving you a subscription and sending you a controller as a loss-leader to earn back over time. [...] We have some ideas, but it’ll take us some time to get there.”
Facebook’s opening gambit does have a downside, though. The types of games it’s offering — free-to-play mobile titles — aren’t the sort that Facebook Gaming streamers typically play.

For Facebook, it’s just another small mechanism to keep users on the platform.

Facebook cloud gaming launches in browsers and on Android - but not iOS

Facebook has launched its cloud gaming service, but while it is available via web browsers and on Android devices, the new app feature won't be usable on iPhones and iPads at launch, due to Apple's "control over a very precious resource."

While the service will be available for many users, Facebook won't be rolling it out to the iOS app at launch. In July, Facebook blamed Apple's policies for not enabling gameplay functionality within a standalone Facebook Gaming app, with most of it needing to be removed in order to be approved by Apple at all.

"While our iOS path is uncertain, one thing is clear. Apple treats games differently and continues to exert control over a very precious resource," writes Facebook.

Apple reached out to AppleInsider, insisting it is continuing to engage with Facebook by providing feedback to bring its apps in compliance with the App Store Review Guidelines. It also supports developers of streaming game services wanting to join the App Store, including accessing users through multiple methods.

Facebook brings cloud gaming to Apple devices with a web app
But will people know how to find it?

Starting Friday, Facebook is bringing its nascent cloud gaming service to iPhones and iPads through a web app people will be able to add to their homescreens like a native app. The site will let you play simple web games like Solitaire and match-threes and stream more graphically intensive titles like racing games.

But thanks to Apple’s rules, it’s unclear how people will find it, since third-party developers like Facebook are barred from steering their app users to websites featuring purchasing mechanisms that aren’t Apple’s own. It’s a huge point of friction with not just Facebook, but other gaming companies like Epic that have strongly protested Apple’s grip on iOS payments.

Facebook’s decision to bring its game platform to iOS via the web mimics the approach of Amazon and Microsoft, which have also released Progressive Web Apps, or PWAs, for their respective cloud gaming services to get around the App Store.

“We’ve come to the same conclusion as others: web apps are the only option for streaming cloud games on iOS at the moment,” Facebook’s vice president of gaming, Vivek Sharma, told The Verge in a statement.
Facebook isn’t a major player in gaming yet, as it has mostly focused on courting streamers to broadcast their gameplay for fans to watch.

Streamlabs says Facebook Gaming views have overtaken YouTube Gaming

For the first time ever, people recently spent more time on Facebook Gaming than YouTube Gaming watching their favorite streamers. That’s according to Streamlabs, which published its Q3 2021 Live Streaming Industry Report on Wednesday.

The company says viewers watched 1.29 billion hours of content on Facebook Gaming between August and September, representing a 9.2 percent increase from the previous quarter. By contrast, the amount of content people watched on YouTube Gaming went from 1.294 billion hours in Q2 2021 to 1.13 billion hours in the most recent three-month period. In terms of viewership, Google’s platform has seen a steady decline since it hit a peak at the end of last year.
