A hot potato: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is having an annual rules meeting later this month. Up for consideration on the agenda is sure to be how movies from streaming services fit into the awarding system (The Oscars), if at all. The DoJ cautioned the Academy that rules discriminating against made-for-streaming movies could violate federal law.

Steven Spielberg has never hidden his contempt for streaming movies calling them nothing more than TV movies eligible for Emmy awards, but not Oscars. Last month, the 72-year-old award-winning filmmaker called for a ban on Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu movies being nominated for Oscars.

The US Department of Justice took note of the movement and warned the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that such a ban might violate anti-trust laws by suppressing competition.
A spokesperson told Variety that the Academy had received the DoJ’s notice and had “responded accordingly,” but did not specify what actions would be taken.

I thought the Oscars only allowed movies shown at the cinema? Why don't Netflix and co make their own awards, for streamed movies?

Movies from streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime will still be eligible for Academy Awards, the film body's board said Wednesday.

The Academy of Motion Picture and Arts and Sciences voted to leave a key rule on eligibility unchanged. The rule allows any film to be considered for an Oscar, so long as they have a minimum seven-day theatrical run in a Los Angeles theatre.
Motion pictures can appear on a streaming service on or after the day of their theatrical run and still be eligible for an award.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is easing up on its opposition to streaming movies, however temporarily. Its board of governors has approved a rule change that will make digital-only movies eligible to win Oscars, but just for the current awards year.

There’s no mystery as to why. With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing theaters in Los Angeles (and much of the world) to close, the Academy can’t insist that movies show on big screens for a week before they qualify.
Don’t expect this to change minds, however.
