Over the years, Evernote has fallen from one of our top note-taking app recommendations to an honorable mention. Even Evernote admits that it “suffered from consistency and scaling challenges” that were holding it back, but the company is ready to change that. Today, it’s unveiling its completely rebuilt iOS app. Rebuilt Windows, Mac and Android apps are coming soon.

Evernote says the new apps improve speed, reliability and scalability. The new interface is “intuitive and clutter-free.” Users have more control over headings, fonts, highlight colors and checklist formats.
All of this was built with insight from nearly 150,000 beta testers.

“We took a bold, unconventional approach to solve the scalability and innovation limitations our product had accumulated over many successful years, which required rebuilding from the ground up,” said CEO Ian Small.

In a series of behind-the-scenes videos, Evernote explains how it rebuilt its apps, but today’s iOS launch will be the first real test. The big question is if Evernote can reclaim its spot as a leader, especially now that it has so much competition from services like Google Keep, Notion and OneNote.

Can Evernote make a comeback?
After years of stagnation, the company has released a major cross-platform redesign

Evernote used to be the king of note-taking apps. The obvious go-to, regardless of the hardware you owned and what you were trying to store. “As a company, we had invented the personal productivity category,” Ian Small, CEO of Evernote told Engadget. That popularity allowed the company to expand into new areas.
But those days are long gone.

In 2015, the company shut down Evernote Food, changed CEO and fired 13 percent of its staff. The not-quite-a-startup then killed its merchandise business, raised prices and implemented a privacy policy that was quickly reversed following widespread user backlash. More staff were laid off in 2018.
The "remember everything" company was no longer the king, but the grandfather of note-taking apps.

Finally, after years of stagnation, it feels like the company is ready for a comeback. Last month, a new version of Evernote was released for iPhone and iPad. A few weeks later, the Windows and MacOS apps received a similar makeover. Evernote’s web-based portal has been refreshed, too, and a similar overhaul is planned for the Android app.

Evernote on Android is a completely new app with new limitations

It was once the household name in productivity but Evernote rested on its laurels far too long, allowing new competitors to catch up and even surpass it when it came to features.
It is a completely new app with a fresh design and fresh features but, unfortunately, comes at some rather heavy costs.

One of the biggest complaints about the classic Evernote experience was that it was slow.

Now for the catch. The new Evernote for Android app is compatible only with Android 10, which already limits how many users will be able to get the new experience.
That said, the update also loses features like home screen widgets, sharing a note via e-mail, and integration with password managers, so some users might actually prefer staying on the older version until these are ironed out completely. Given Evernote’s pace, however, that might not happen any time soon.

Evernote's Home feature is a dashboard full of handy widgets

Back in September, Evernote started rolling it out its first major redesign in years. At the time, the company promised the refresh was just the start of an ongoing initiative to make its app, once a titan in the space, faster, more reliable and better than ever before.

Today, Evernote detailed the first of several new features coming to its software this year. It’s called Home, and it’s essentially a dashboard made up of widgets that allow you to access some of Evernote’s most useful functionality from one place.
As a basic or plus user, you’ll get access to three widgets.

Meanwhile, as a premium or business subscriber, you’ll find four additional widgets with more advanced functionality. In addition to a place for notes, you’ll find one dedicated to your notebooks.
Additionally, premium and business users can customize the dashboard by reordering and removing any of the included widgets, as well as resizing them as they see fit.

Evernote plans to roll out the Home update to Mac, Windows and web users over the next few weeks. The feature will make its way to iOS and Android devices at a later date.

Evernote was probably the most popular organization app a few years ago but they experienced a sort of fall from grace with the changes they brought to their free plan. Their competitors have also stepped up their game, particularly the free ones like iOS’ Notes and Google Keep. But they’re now trying to get back previous users and get new ones as well with new features and new plans that they hope will appeal to users that are willing to pay for an app like this.

Basically, there are now four plans for Evernote users. Evernote Basic is now known as Evernote Free but it’s still the same 60MB monthly upload restriction and maximum 25MB note size plus synchronization on two devices only. Evernote Premium is now Evernote Personal and is still the most affordable of their plans at $7.99 per month. Evernote Professional is for the higher-end power user with more features of course at $9.99 per month. Lastly, Evernote Business is now Evernote Teams and is meant for collaboration among team members. It’s also the most expensive at $14.99 per user per month.

Evernote has also added some requested features like Linux support (now in beta), Boolean search refinement (for Professional tier), and exporting notes and notebooks as PDF files. Well, all users can export notes as PDF but only those on the Professional tier and above can export notebooks. The Home dashboard now supports Tasks and Calendars, if you’re on the correct tier, so all your stuff can be seen in one window at once.
