About 10 days ago I experienced a problem on my main PC where file transfers over my gigabit LAN were more than 50% slower than normal. After several days of troubleshooting everything I determined the problem was cased by a recent ESET Smart Security Update (At the time I was running v9 but I also tested with v10)

    My main PC is Win7 SP1 x64 with an i7-3960X @ 3.7ghz, 32gb ram, boot drive is a Samsung 850 Pro 256GB.

Now I have multiple other PCs running Windows 10 Pro build 14393 that I used to confirm the issue was caused by ESET Smart Security.

I confirmed the issue by transferring a file from a local FTP server using the localhost (127.0.0.1 and bypassed my LAN entirely) to download from a ramdisk onto a ramdisk, the speed from ramdisk to ramdisk is typically insanely fast.

This issue is specific to FTP downloads, when uploading from the FTP client to the server the transfer is not throttled by ESET Smart Security.

    Here's my results:

With ESET Smart Security v10 using the default configuration.

A local host to local host using a ramdisk the download speed is on avg. 87 MB/s
A local host to local host using a SSD the download speed is on avg. 47 MB/s

and the download speed is identical whether anti-virus protection and/or the firewall is disabled.

After uninstalling ESET Smart Security (and even before restarting the PC)

A local host to local host using a ramdisk the download speed is on avg. 349 MB/s
A local host to local host using a SSD the download speed is on avg. 128 MB/s

After this test I restarted the PC and ran the tests again.
(My ramdisk results were skewed so I re-ran all the tests again using my SSD drive.

A local host to local host using a ramdisk the download speed is on avg. 512 MB/s
A local host to local host using a SSD the download speed is on avg. 128 MB/s

In addition to testing ESET Smart Security; I also tested with ESET NOD32 Anti-virus v10 since my license key is valid for both products and I found that the ESET NOD32 Anti-virus product does not have any impact on the download transfer speed.

In addition to testing local host transfers I also tested file transfers over my gigabit LAN and the results were very similar but to keep this post short I excluded those results from above, also it made more sense to test locally to eliminate other possible factors.

On Sunday I contacted ESET support, Monday morning they fired off an rather robotic response asking me to run ESET Log Collector and send the in results, which I did, now its 24 hours later and still no reply. (Case #1495572)

The past 2 weeks have been a nightmare, mostly trying to identify the problem, because I had powered down my main PC for some TCL and dust removal from the internals components. So I initially blamed myself, thinking maybe something failed, or network cable connector, etc..

Then thought I better test my other PC's that's when I realized they too were experiencing the same issue, except for a new netbook that arrived in the mean-time and it did not have ESET Smart security installed on it yet.

    Some other interesting information...

I found an old download of ESET Smart Security v8 (full-product, not the live downloader) and installed it with my PC offline so the updater couldn't run. After installation I ran the same tests as above and no issues. Connected the PC to my network and did a virus signature update (not a product update) immediately after the update was installed I re-ran the test and the download speed is throttled.

So has anyone else noticed this very obvious problem?

I have had no such problems with my Windows 10 computer utilizing the latest version of ESET Smart Security. I have, however, recently experienced problems with Windows updates for 64-bit configuration. Still trying to figure this one out.

AFAIK, even if you don't update main product, modules still get update and updated module could be cause of the problem. If AV-only doesn't throttle your speed, but SS does, I would suspect that it's FW that is causing a problem. Did you try to disable firewall and see if it makes any changes?

    [CASE UPDATE]

I received an email reply from ESET regarding my issue shortly after my post on here, turns out the logs collected from my machines did not provide enough information and they put me in touch with a remote troubleshooting specialist. She called me up and after an hour of remote access (testing on 2 of my machines) she was able to confirm that there is an issue. Comparing the results with and without ESET Smart security installed the issue was made very clear, she was unsuccessful at resolving the issue by changing application settings. She took diagnostic logs from my machines and told me she was providing this information directly to the developers. With the holidays I probably wont hear anything back until Monday but if I do I will let everyone know.

I would suggest reporting ESET-related issues in our official forum at https://forum.eset.com where your posts would get better attention of ESET's moderators.
Does temporarily disabling protocol filtering make a difference?
