ESET Smart Security can't update its virus database

    Smart Security 4 has been unable to update its virus database.
    Apparently its automatic update function has tried some number of times, but failed every time.

    The last successful update was to version 5287 on July17.

    When I try to manually launch an update, I get

    "-----Virus signature database could not be updated.
    Undocumented serious error (0x101a)"
    -----
    I'm not having any problems accessing anything else on the Internet.

    Has the update server been hit by a virus?

    try to flush the update cache
    Update -> Clear update cache

    A computer restart should resolve this issue.
