Managed to get ecsan working, thanks to this site.

What settings do you use in console?

How long does the scan take?

    Size of drive?

Looking for an on-demand scanner to supplement free-avast. Bitdefender looks nice but has a file, BDSS.EXE, that grows to 16meg even when Bitdefender is not running. Anyway of getting rid of this?

    Cheers

For the record I have dumped escan as the scan was sooooooooo slooooooooooow.

Bitdefender scanned 300k files in 30mins. After 30mins Escan was on 13k.

I have a 1.5Ghz mobile celeron and 1/2gig ram under XP.

Having read the posts to get it working I am very disappointed.

I use BitDefender Free as a backup and it doesnt use alot of resources when scanning.

I don't know whats going on with your system. I have both BitDefender and eScan 4.4.7, as far as I'm concerned both are pretty close in scan speed. On my system (57gig) BitDefender is 2min faster.

IMHO (for free) KAV engine and detection of eScan is well worth what ever scan time.

    found problem see update below.

'I went with Bitdefender as well. BD has an annoying file BDSS.exe that sits there when BD is not running but relative to

Escan free (old one that cleans) - really slow scan for some reason. Something wrong with config I guess. Tried twice and gave up.

Antivir - nice small package, fast scan similar to BD, but download of new signatures on my cable modem was 5kbps.

Clamwin - slow scan and not too sure it has a pedigree yet.

So BD backsup my free Avast. I use freeramxp to free ram when I need it.

Follow-up: It seems I needed to set Standard Shield on Avast to Normal to give Escan more processing power. Took 30mins and found 2 instances of tool.win32.reboot that it has classed as not virus. Not sure whether to stay with BD or move to Escan?'

tool.win32.reboot is something no one except for the KAV-based engines detects. This is intentionally.

It's simply what the name says a program that's able to reboot a machine. IMHO not malware at all... ;)

    @Iangh

Avast! as the main AV and either eScan 4.4.7 or BitDefender free is a great combination, thats what my setup is :)

When you run a manual scan make sure you pause Avast! Standard Shield, that way you won't have two AV running at same time. No conflicts and eScan & BD are zippy fast ;)

Restart Avast Standard Shield when done.

I use BD 8.0 and escan 4.4.7. Both take a little over 30 minutes to scan. I am not concerned about the time, and just let them run when I am doing something else. I believe that with the two plus Ewido paid I have about as good protection as is reasonable possible.
I have never had an infection.

1.Does BD free has the same engine and signatures as BD standard?

    2.Do Both have same heuristics?

Yes, BD 7-8-9 all have the same engine, heuristics and signatures, I know 8 & 9 do and IBK said 7 does also.
