I haven't used it myself, but it has a loyal following.

    Edit: from their FAQ's

I use Blowfish Advanced CS 2.57 without Installer – Open Source, although
for some reason it doesn't seem very popular amongst our members. For me
it does a good job and seems to speed up things. I first use it to clear
empty disc space and then defrag. Here is the link to the site :-

Be sure to read the pdf manual. Another useful function is 'Deslack' (but
rather not use it on your OS drive - it's fine on non-system drives). This is
    what it does:-
"When data is stored into a file the operating systems allocates as much clusters (the smallest logical unit of a drive) on the data medium as needed to keep all the file's data. A cluster has a fixed size, e.g. 512 bytes up to 32 kB, depending on the file system. Most of all files don't fit exactly into the cluster grid, of course.

The unused space in the last cluster of a file is called slack and may contain (sensitive) data from deleted files.

You can clear the slack of the selected files and files in (sub)folders by using this menu entry."

    Regards

DiskRedactor is great utility for wiping free space in my windows partitions.
It is very easy to use and completely free.

I downloaded this after reading many positive reviews about it. After installation, I ran it through Explorer to erase the unused space on my C:/ drive. It took about an hour to complete (no issues). Some files (FD-ISR, Kaspersky, Counterspy, etc) were locked and could not be accessed. After reboot, I decided to run it again and see how long it would complete after already deleting the previous old data. To my surprise, the 2nd go around took just as long as the 1st sweep. Does this sound right?

I'm beginning to wonder if this software even works.

I haven't used the program, but found this from their FAQ's.
While the question is not what you asked, the part I made bold could be the reason why it takes so long. Someone would have to confirm this.
