Is encryption necessary when using wlan on a mobile phone

Is the encryption that comes with smartphones strong enough

If so can anyone recommend a suitable program

Would kasperskey or norton be suitable

That encryption choice is done in the host device, usually a router. The phone doesn't choose the encryption. So if you choose WPA2 (the best) on the router thats what every device has to use to connect to the router.
