HAN has a good point regarding ISP based email as it can make switching service providers problematic. Webmail partially solves this by untying you from a specific ISP, but you’re still bound to that email provider.

Since you’re already willing to get a new email address, I’d suggest you take it one step further and register your own domain. Now you would have even more flexibility in not only changing your ISP, but also who hosts your email. If you become uncomfortable with a particular company, just move it to another or host it yourself.

If you’re comfortable with Microsoft and their Outlook.com service, you could always start by registering your domain with them. You’ll get all the advantages (and disadvantages) of their service, but with the flexibility to move in the future.

This link offers a guide to setting up a custom domain with Outlook.com

Of course, this being Wilders, you can’t forget that Outlook.com restricts passwords to 16 characters and doesn’t have a 2 factor authentication login option. The importance of that is up to you.

Good point, same reason I use my own domain, so I can move email hosting (and I have done a number of times).

    Cheers, Nick

An MVP colleague from Italy recommends Claws Mail. Possibly worth a look. Note, untested by me.

Claws Mail is just a client though.

Yup, know that - what I'm trying to do is get Troop to use a software based email client as is T-Bird or are we not on the same page.

You cannot use a mail client by itself though; you need someone to provide the service (Google, Microsoft, GMX, your own email server, etc).

Google does not do any doodle relating to religion.
so i don't see a problem with them posting a doodle for the birthday of Chavez, Einstein or whatever on whichever day of the year.

anyway, you might want to give Outlook.com a try.
i like it better than the 'old' Hotmail service and GUI.

Yahoo mail is my dumping ground. Whenever I signup for a forum I use my Yahoo account. So, as a result, I receive a lot of spam emails due, I assume, to my address being sold. But, to give them credit, Yahoo is the only email service I use that shows me how many spam emails I have with the option to delete everything without having to go into the folder to delete them. Plus, they have a great rules filtering system as well. BTW, they now offer https for their email service.

As for Gmail, I've grown to not trust them anymore because of their "tracking me" tendencies. I've totally dropped them.

For the past good while I've been using outlook.com. All my important emails go there. I personally like it and recommend it.

I long ago stopped using email clients on my computers. No need for them really. Just a waste of space.

    Later...

Maybe I should just go with Outlook.com. They do not have the ads and crap that Google does if I remember correctly right?

How much storage space do you get?

    Thanks!

Microsoft's Scroogled campaign was all about informing the public of Gmail's targeted advertising. In the process they claimed that they didn't go through your email to sell ads.

Forgot all about that, thanks for the reminder.

Are there any decent apps for iOS for Outlook.com email?

I've been using GMX for over a year. I think they are based in Germany.
Other than being 'out of reach' a couple of times, I consider it a good alternative to free e-mail services. Also, I saw somebody said they spam but they haven't spammed me.
