As advised this morning I upgraded to the v4 upgrade.

Now I have a NEW problem with my Windows Mail (I don't have Outlook or Outlook Express). Windows Mail came with my Vista Premium computer.

I can receive mail but when I send it I get this message:

"An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'mail.xxxxxxxxxxxx.com', Server: 'outgoing.verizon.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.7.1 The message you attempted to send was determined to be spam. Please visit http://www.verizon.net/spamfaq for more information.', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC69"

Now, what on earth do I do? I can't win here. Traded one problem just to get a different one instead. My understanding was that ESET fixed the email problems that many other people were getting. Well, maybe so but they just gave me one that I did not have before. :gack:

    Somebody please HELP. Pretty please.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello,

Based on your description of the problem, it sounds like the your mail provider is blocking the message, not ESET's software. You might want to check with Verizon and see what steps they recommend to make the message less spam-like.

It was working fine all day until I did the ESET upgrade.

I even sent a TEST email to myself. Has to be ESET's upgrade.

Are you by any chance adding the "checked by" message used in the default setting that is appended to every email by ESS? If so, try changing it to look like the screenshot and see if it helps.

In version 4.0.424.0, I don't see that kind of a setup (the one in your snapshot) in the email-spam module. There is an "action" screen about what to do with infected items. Mine (default) is set to "infected items".

    All my settings are DEFAULT.

I have a 2 year subscription and I am really baffled and quite sad about this. I sure didn't have this problem with v4 this morning BEFORE I upgraded to
    4.0.424.0.

This does not bode well for ESET. Before I upgraded I scanned the upgrade changelogs and one of the things it mentioned was resolving email problems. Go figure!

You should change the default settings to the one I mentioned in the screenshot and see if your email is still tagged as spam.

Click on the tray icon, press F5 for advanced setup, and click on Email client protection for the settings. Change the default settings to "infected email only".

OK, I finally found what you are writing about and made those changes.

    Thank you very much.

This will not in any way make my "Maximum Protection" less than that will it? I'm thinking that changing DEFAULT settings may make me more vulnerable, you follow? Naturally I want the best protection possible.

(Why else would I stay with ESET :cautious: ?)

No. Does the change eliminate your problem?

What does the ESS taglines have to do with newbie's sent email being regarded as SPAM?

There is a possibilty that Verizon is picking up the appended tag and classifying the entire message as spam.

Read the Verizon spamfaq in the first post in this thread.

Yep, it works now. I'm receiving my simple test emails but in my spam folder so I just have to fix that. Hopefully that will be easy.

    Thanks again. Very much.

I just worry that this change from default might make me vulnerable. Worrywart that I am. :doubt:

I just sent some test emails , tag-lines and all, using Outlook Express to a friend of mine who also uses Verizon(.net). She received the emails but without the tag-lines.

    Hey newbie...

Rest assured. All you are doing is keeping Smart Security's Anti-spam from putting in an identifiying tag-line at the bottom of every email that you send out. It won't affect your security at all.

OK. Thank you both for all your help.

I still have the SPAM problem but at least my ESET is OK. I'll just have to live with the SPAM thing if I cannot come up with a solution.

Let me see I if understand you. You are receiving your test emails but in your SPAM folders. Correct?

What are the contents of these test emails that you are sending to yourself?
I can only assume it's just a few words like:

    Hello,

    This is only a test.

    Thank you.

Ummmm. These emails that you sent to yourself: were they the one's that you sent before you made the tag-line changes in ESS? If you sent any before you made the changes to the ESS tag-lines then it's possible you may have "blacklisted" you own email address. Try right-clicking on the Header and see if there are any ESS options available for messages from said address as "Safe" or "Not SPAM", or something simular.

I've never used Windows Mail so I can't tell you what exactly to do.

Try right-clicking on which "header" please? I don't understand, sorry.

I "whitelisted" myself. I also selected "this is not spam", "this is not junk",
"this sender + domain is safe" "trusted address" and so on. I, myself, cannot think of one more single thing to do.

Under EMAIL CLIENTS, what the the checked box "accept scan results from other modules" mean?

    My test emails:

    addy: my own

    subject: test

    body: test

That's how I've always done it in the past, so that's how I'm doing it now and I'm receiving them -with the changes + without them. I also did test emails using "this is only a test" after reading your kind reply. Same results.

    I'm flummoxed. o_O

Wow.. this seems to be really weird.

Honestly.. I would downgrade to V3 again.
This is not really solving the problem....hmmm...

Just to be sure. maybe you should try it with a virtual client.. ?
Install there V3 and try it with V3.

Then you are 100 % sure that V4 is causing ur problem... and it was not 2 problems (at verizon and ur update), happening at the same time.

    Sorry Newbie

I'm as stumped as you are. :doubt:

The only thing I could suggest, if you want to stay with the new ESS build is to use the same downloaded install package to uninstall it. You'll be prompted for a reboot. Go back into Windows. Navigate to the Documents And Settings directory>All Users/User/Default User and delete any ESET folders. If you have the means to use Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View set it up like this:

    FolderOptions.JPG

When you're done with that look for any other left-over ESET Folders and delete them too.

Reinstall ESS 4.0.424. and get it all updated. Go into the Advanded Setup and make those new changes for omitting the tag-lines. Better yet, just uncheck the box for outgoing email, like this:

    Email.JPG

Do your email tests and see what happens.

If that doesn't do the trick then you might want to consider reverting back to ESS 3.0.

    Good Luck.

UPDATE problem with version 4 upgrade

I've just noticed yet another new and serious problem with the v4 upgrade.

Since I installed it 2 days ago, I haven't received one single update and I just know that is not right?

As I said the other day when posting about my SPAM problem, all of my settings are "default". What could be the problem now?

Any ideas? I just don't believe the black cloud hanging over my head.

No updates is very serious. I could get the Conflicker and heaven knows what else. I'm quite vulnerable.

    Thanks in advance.

What version of the virus database do you have installed?

If it is 4035 (20090425) then you are fully updated. If you did the initial intallation Friday evening then the ensuing updates that is the last updated version of the virus database. There usually are not any updated versions over the weekend.

Yeah, quite concerned ... I barely can believe threats are resting over weekends as Eset labs do. In my local time and Eset's as well, is Monday 10 a.m. and the last definition has been deployed on 2009-04-25 04:27 a.m., i.e. more than 48 hours short of update. So can someone from Eset justify that and explain how we are kept secured without having updates for so long. I encourage Eset to a brave reply. Sorry if my post sounds intrusive :D.

OK after 56 hours 4036 is out, great feat, indeed! I wouldn't be bothered with such release period let's say 10 years back or so but now in 2009 when competitors are hunting threats 24 hours, 365 days and trying to spread their definitions as quickly as possible, it's somewhat odd (I am really polite) ... OMG, seeing in calendar ... this Friday and next as well are Slovak public holidays ...

I have 4036 (20090727). I now see they finally got around to giving me an update this morning after a good 3 days without out any. Good lord! I hope I didn't get any malicious malware while waiting. EEK!

I also see that for the second time, Saturday AM and this AM, my "daily" + scheduled 7AM in-depth scan did NOT run automatically. (I forgot to add that into my last post.) So now it's happened twice! :argh:

Why am I having all these problems? :( o_O Why? I've had ESET for years and it's like the "you know what" has now hit the fan BIGTIME! The daily scan is a scheduled thing and it went fine yesterday - Sunday - so we all know I set it up correctly, so why is it skipping scans? o_Od

I'm so tired of problems. Enough already. :thumbd:

3 days waiting for an update is INSANE. o_O What are they thinking? :gack:

Any ideas or help with ESET skipping scheduled daily scans? Never, ever did that to many in all the time I've used them.

    Thanks all!

It is not uncommon for any vendor to go a few days without an update. If one was needed they can also push one out. I have seen F-Secure go for quite awhile without one. So think what you want.

As far as your scheduled scan not running, some screenshots of your settings might help then to just assume the product is broke. Sometimes just providing that one extra piece of evidence is the quickest way for someone to assist you.

What is a "screenshot"? How do I perform one? What do I take aa screenshot of?

F-Secure goes a long time too, eh? Not a good thing IMHO. When I had Trend Micro, I was getting updates all day long, everyday. I really felt protected knowing that. This PC came with the ESET already installed. (It was a surprise gift to me so I had no choice but grew to like ESET very much.)

Right now I'm not very happy with ESET but hopefully this SPAM issue and others can get resolved ASAP or else I don't what recourse I have.

Thank you both for your posts. Forive my typos's - I have my scan running, LOL. The one that was supposed to run automatically hours ago. :argh:
