I just saw an unbelieveable story on the news.

A small island, population 60,000, just 60 kms. from the earthquake's epicentre, somehow prepared themselves for impending disaster. When the earthquake hit, the people ran to higher ground immediately, knowing a tsunami would soon follow.

When it was over, 6 people had died....

    Everyone,

Some might remember a posting from me somewhere in september about my daughter, graduate from University and starting as a Vet in India. She is save and today I heard she is assisting a 40 people medical team and travelling to SE India to assist. I am Proud Annemiek but also know it will be a hard time for you what you will see there. Take care sweety!

Said that and being glad she is OK I also am aware of thenthousends being killed. I feel miserable and my prayings are for the families who lost their loved ones.

Burning candles tonight for all who lost their loved ones.

Thanks Snowbound, I really appreciate that. Though it's difficult keeping in contact with her, I'll do my very best. She's doing great but horrible job there.
    Cheers,

    Gerard

Glad to hear your daughter is safe... and glad that there is one more helping hand.. they need all they can get.
Hmm... then where were you with your "rights" when 9/11 happened? There was NO news item back then, was there?
No TV crews barging in on the survivors with TV crews sticking cameras in their face... No CNN showing dead bodies... no BBC showing grieving families... No. When asked about this, a BBC exec replied that its necessary to show an endless stream of dead bodies and torn limbs to "convey the magnitude of the disaster"...
    Edit: http://www.indianexpress.com/full_story.php?content_id=61777
However, I will stay out of this discussion further... If only to let an orderly discussion prevail.
Also, I never "told" you what to say and not to say... you let your own conscience decide... You were in the affected zone... what can I say?

    Snowbound...
what can I say? I'm tired of seeing stats about the dead... why can't we focus on the people who're alive? Is it not true that cholera, malaria and other diseases now pose a greater threat? Should we not rush help in the form of basic medication?

    Survivor: 'Aceh has drowned'

    http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/asiapcf/01/01/asia.quake/index.html

I have donated my time to many relief agencies over the yrs. but i have never seen this kind of devastation. My father, a doctor, was a great believer in going wherever help was needed. He took leave and went to Biafra in 1968 to help out in that catastrophe. Iam seriously thinking of doing the same here.....

I just saw a report that approx. 2 billion dollars in aid has been donated from governments around the world.

The conmen are out already, people have been trying to make money from this incident by pretending to be charities collecting money for the survivers.

I would just like to add on a side note that earlier in the thread No12 suggested a very good idea. The idea was that instead of talking about the dead and getting sad, why not talk about the survivers who live to tell the tale.

With very great respect for what she's doing (and ALL the other rescue-workers),

This was posted by a member of a small forum I attend . it was posted on the 30 th december . Its uplifting and the initial feelings after the event . It was in a response to a posting from some one who resides in another part of the world who was trying to understand how we deal with such in ourselves .

    Hallo all,

I am from Malaysia. One of the affected country. I agree with Sue that disaster do bring out the best in human. Especially in the realm of spirituality.

There is now outpouring of help from everyone to the victims of tsunami. Every layer of society is suddenly aware of their own fragile human lifes. There is so much of outpouring of compassion in the country to the one affected. Charities, foods, clothing etc is pouring in to the victims. Human suffering brings out the compassion in us.

In the news, we heard of father losing sons, mother losing their daughters, grandfather losing their grandchild, husband losing their wife, family wipe out. It is indeed a great tragedy.

Our country had called off the New Year celebration in memory of the dead.

Such tragedy suddenly push you into Now. To let go of excess baggage and realise that life is precious.
    tjkeat

I wanted to share this as its from one who is effected and an insight into how when all has been swept from us we have each other .
