I read where one guy with this issue was able to resolve it with a firmware update. So I went to HP's support site and had a diagnostic ran on the laptop. Everything checks out ok. Next step, external player purchase and hope for the best. Thanks again to all who took time to assist. Much appreciated!
I have had issues for a while now playing DVDs or even audio CDs on my PC. They work fine on dedicated players. I hope they're not breaking this stuff to push folks to buy TV and movies from the Microsoft store.
Event 51, cdrom = An error was detected on device\Device\CdRom0 during a paging operation. Numerous episodes of this in Event Viewer. Question: what exactly is this telling me, and more importantly, what must be done to correct it?

Update: 3 out of 4 random movie dvds played thru the previews plus the movie, while 1 stalled after the previews. Not back to normal but much better than before. I'll monitor if this is consistent over next few days.
It was sporadic like that with my Lenovo laptop as well. I never figured it out and now watch DVD's on other devices.
Decades ago my dad, who was an engineer, told me about a strategy embraced by many top tier companies like GE called 'planned obsolescence.' The idea being that consumer products would be made with a finite lifespan design thereby forcing the consumer to purchase new product(s) to keep the profits flowing. The notion you put forth wouldn't be so farfetched.
