DPA Report: Russia-linked APT28 group hacked Germany’s government network

German news agency DPA reported that Russian hackers belonging to the APT28 group (aka Fancy Bear, Pawn Storm, Sednit, Sofacy, and Strontium) have breached Germany’s foreign and interior ministries’ online networks.

The agency, quoting unnamed security sources, revealed that the APT28 hackers planted malware in the ministries’ networks. The malicious code was undetected as long as a year.

No evidence thus far that Russia behind German cyber attack - economy minister

German Economy Minister Brigitte Zypries on Thursday said there were no indications thus far that Russia was behind a cyber attack on German computer networks disclosed by Berlin on Wednesday.

When it comes to hacking, its nearly impossible to pin it on anybody; thanks to VPN's and other advances in technology. So its more than likely a friend of the DPA who was involved.

Germany scrambles to contain cyber attack on government systems

Germany has yet to fully contain a cyber attack on the government’s computer networks, indicating the threat is more serious than initially thought.

“The federal government is trying to get the situation under control,” Armin Schuster, head of the German parliamentary body that oversees intelligence operations, said Thursday at a press conference in Berlin. “The betrayal of state secrets on its own represents significant damage.”

His comments are in contrast to a statement late Wednesday from the Interior Ministry, which said the incursion was “isolated and under control.”
