I have just joined this forum following recent trojan horse problems. AVG keeps detecting the trojan horse virus Downloader.Keenval.B in a System Restore Information folder and advises me to run AVG. When I run AVG it says everything is ok.

I have followed the advice in one of the postings and my hijackthis log file is as follows, I would be grateful for any expert advice. I used Ad-Ware

    Hello Razza !

    Welcome to Wilders !

Before you start, please move HijackThis.exe to a separate folder of its own something like c:\hijackthis\hijackthis. The program will make backups to the folder it's in. These easily get lost in a temporary folder.

Now, close down all window instances, running programs and rescan your machine with Hijackthis & Check the items listed below in HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    F1 - win.ini: load=C:\TBridge\Flatbed.exe
    O2 - BHO: myBar BHO - {0494D0D1-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - C:\Program Files\MyWay\myBar\1.bin\MYBAR.DLL

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P Networking] C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe /AUTOSTART
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [updmgr] C:\Program Files\Common files\updmgr\updmgr.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE <-- Major resource hog.

    O16 - DPF: {AD7FAFB0-16D6-40C3-AF27-585D6E6453FD} - http://dload.ipbill.com/del/loader.cab

Reboot your machine and boot into safe mode by tapping F8 key(8-9 times) at bootup.

Now, go to the Control Panel's and click on Add/Remove Programs feature. Choose 'KeenValue' and click 'Remove'
Also, remove 'Myway \ My Bar '.

Search and delete the following folder..

    C:\Program Files\Common files\updmgr <-- This folder
    C:\Program Files\MyWay <-- This folder

Reboot your machine and boot into normal mode.

Rescan your machine with hijackthis and please post a fresh log..

    With thanks !

    Hi Newkid

Followed your instructions, the only problem I encountered with the instructios was that when I opened control panel and went to add/remove programs feature there was no trace of "KeenValue" or "Myway \ My Bar".
I did find and deleted the folders C:\Program Files\Common files\updmgr
C:\Program Files\MyWay as instructed and the fresh log is below

Okay. Your new log is much better then previous log. :)

I still can see that you are running hijackthis from Temp folder.I advised you to move it to a separate folder because the program will make backups to the folder it's in. And in your case, it easily get lost in a temporary folder.

Now, You need to fix only one bad entry this time..

Close down all window instances, running programs and rescan your machine with Hijackthis & Check the items listed below in HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    O3 - Toolbar: &SearchBar - {0494D0D9-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - C:\Program Files\MyWay\myBar\1.bin\MYBAR.DLL (file missing)

Reboot your machine and boot into normal mode.

Update your antivirus (AVG) if it's not up to date and rescan your machine fully Or you can scan your machine online at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

When all done, Please post a fresh hijackthis log along with the finding antivirus.

    With thanks !

    Hi Newkid

Followed your instructions. I have moved Hijackthis to its own folder on C:\Hijackthis\Hijackthis but when I do a scan it shows it in a temp foldero_O

Avg updated and scanned and found Downloader.Small.6.L as a precaution I also ran the trendmicro scan. That found Downloader.Dyfica.N and also TROJ REVOP.A and advised me to run AVG. I did this but AVG found no viruseso_O

I have printed out the hijack log below

    Razza,

Your log seems clean now. :)

Can you tell us where AVG / Trend Micro found which file to be the trojan Revop.A; Downloader.Dyfica.N :Downloader.Small.6.L ?

Do one more thing, Please Turn off system restore by following instructions

    here http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...001012513122239

That will purge the restore folder and clear any malware that has been put in there.

Also, Delete the contents of all your temp folders, as in.
the contents of the C:\Documents and Settings\Ray\Local Settings\Temp\ if there.. Clear IE's cache via control panel internet options [delete files] button and mark the popup to also delete offline content.

Then reboot & then re-enable sytem restore & create a new restore point and scan your machine again with AVG.

    With Thanks !
    Newkid

    Hi Newkid

Did as you said and all seems ok at the moment. AVG and Trendmicro all scan clear.
I read an article last year about the vulnerability of TCP/IP on Windows XP I now Know first hand, despite regular updates to AVG virus definitions and Zone alarm and also Windows updates I have had more problems with XP than I ever had with Win 98.
Thanks for all your help, it has been a steep learning curve.

    Cheers

    Razza
