DoorDash can now drop off your packages

Never mind asking DoorDash to deliver meals or groceries — it can now take items off your hands, too. The service has introduced a Package Pickup option that has a courier grab your prepaid packages from various carriers (including FedEx, UPS and USPS) and drop them off at the appropriate mailing location. You can use a prepaid shipping label if you have one, but you can also send shipping QR codes directly to the courier and skip the printer or box.

However, DoorDash is obviously counting on convenience as a selling point. You can use a familiar app to ship packages when you'd rather not make the trek to the local depot.

The new feature is also part of a larger trend of expanding delivery apps beyond food. It's now relatively easy to use DoorDash, Uber and similar services to get convenience store essentials, prescriptions and even your Facebook Marketplace purchases.

Starbucks to expand U.S. delivery via DoorDash nationwide by March

Starbucks Corp (SBUX.O) expanded its U.S. partnership with DoorDash Inc (DASH.N) on Tuesday, the company said, betting that its customers will still be willing to pay more to have their high-end drinks delivered even as the pandemic starts to fade.

Coffee drinkers in Northern California, Texas, Georgia, Florida and some other markets can now get their Pistachio Cream Cold Brew delivered via DoorDash. The coffee chain tested DoorDash in Atlanta, Houston and Sacramento, California, before adding Seattle; Portland, Oregon; and New York City last year.

Starbucks delivery has been available on Uber Eats (UBER.N) nationwide since 2020. Starbucks will expand its DoorDash areas in coming weeks and is expected to be in all 50 states by March, the company said.

The coffee chain's U.S. delivery had grown 20% year over year and people were spending about twice as much money on delivery orders versus in-store orders, Chief Marketing Officer Brady Brewer said at the company's Investor Day in September.

"Delivery represents a significant growth opportunity for us that we anticipate to double in revenue in the next couple of years," he said, according to a transcript.

Uber Eats now shows users which of their personal details couriers can see

The next time you order something from Uber Eats, you'll be able to find out what personal information of yours a courier can see at each stage of the delivery process. The View as Delivery Person feature follows a View as Driver function Uber added in 2020. Starting today, Uber Eats users in the US and Canada can access the information from the recent order page and in the app's privacy center (under the privacy menu on the account tab).

The delivery person will only know an approximate delivery location until they collect the order. Then they'll typically have access to your first name, initial of your last name and exact delivery location. Uber will provide them with your delivery instructions and notes too. After the order is completed, the courier will once again only see a general delivery location in their app.

Safety is a critical concern for many Uber and Uber Eats users. Singleton added that women are “53 percent more likely to have a concern about the information that delivery people had when something uncomfortable has occurred.”

DoorDash introduces new safety features for riders, including reduced notifications

Delivery company DoorDash is introducing new features for riders, including reduced notifications, a request for customers to not text them while they are on a trip and messaging promoting one-tap replies.

DoorDash is updating its iOS app (for iOS 15 or above) to reduce notifications sent to delivery partners while they are on the way. They will only get some notifications like a change to the delivery address, messages from their customer or if an order has been reassigned after being timed out during a trip. Other notifications will be muted and delivery partners can only see them when they indicate they have reached their destination.

The company is rolling out this feature to all riders across the globe using iPhones with plans to extend it to Android in the coming months.

DoorDash will also update customers with a prompt requesting them to not text delivery people while they are driving. The company is not really showing customers if the delivery partner is currently driving. The prompt will just tell users to be mindful by saying “Please note your Dasher may be driving and be delayed in their response.”

For new delivery partners joining the platform, the company has introduced a feature to perform a demo delivery at their own place to understand the flow of the service. This process walks the delivery people from accepting the order to completing a delivery so they can get familiar with the app before starting real-world deliveries.

DoorDash said that last year it partnered with telematics provider Cambridge Mobile Telematics(CMT) to give drivers access to the DriveWell Go app. It provided participating drivers insights on areas like speed, distance traveled and braking during their riding. The company said that it is still evaluating data from the pilot in the U.S. to provide feedback to drivers.

Even so, we’re constantly working hard to make dashing even safer because any injury, any death is a tragedy.

Today, DoorDash is taking the next step forward and announcing a new set of safety initiatives to further help Dashers stay safe and focused while on the road. The new initiatives include empowering some Dashers with advanced telematics, reducing the number of notifications while dashing, limiting in-app interactions and making the first dash even easier.
