Instacart announced today that it has raised $200 million in a new funding round featuring prior investors. D1 Capital and Valiant Peregrine Fund led the investment. Instacart is now worth $17.7 billion, post-money, or $17.5 billion pre-money. The plan is to use the funding to focus on introducing new features and tools to improve the customer experience, and further support Instacart’s enterprise and ads businesses, according to a blog post.
Previously in 2020, Instacart raised $100 million in July, and $225 million in June.

Instacart, like some other tech, and tech-enabled businesses, has seen demand for its service expand during the pandemic. It’s not hard to trace a connection between COVID-19 and its business results, as folks wanting to stay at home have turned to on-demand services to keep themselves safe.
The growth shown by Uber’s food delivery business is another example of this trend.

Order growth accelerated from an increase of 32% in the first half of 2020, with orders up 47% in Germany and 43% in the United Kingdom. Restaurants in the Netherlands delivered a third more meals through the company’s platform.

“We have continued to generate strong adjusted EBITDA, while investing aggressively, and are well-positioned for autumn and winter, our traditional growth season,” Chief Executive Jitse Groen said, without providing further financial details.

Food delivery app DoorDash is working alongside California-based Burma Superstar for a brick-and-mortar store, according to a report from The Verge.

The concentration could get even more pronounced if Uber’s proposed acquisition of Postmates gets regulatory approval.

“Any given market is often dominated by two or even one of them,” said Stacy Mitchell, co-director of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, a nonprofit group that advocates for local resources.
“They’re corralling customers and then using their gatekeeper power to extract from restaurants," Mitchell said, arguing that many of the practices are deceptive.

Grubhub has added more than 150,000 restaurants to its food-delivery platform without getting permission from their owners, a lawsuit filed this week in Chicago alleges.

According to lawyers for some of the eateries behind the complaint, Grubhub added "non-partnered restaurants" because company officials felt pressure from shareholders to boost revenue and beat competitors DoorDash and Uber Eats.

"Grubhub's decision to add unaffiliated restaurants to its platform may have reaped immediate dividends for Grubhub, but those gains came at the expense of restaurants who had good reasons for choosing not to partner with Grubhub," the complaint states.
A Netherlands-based company called Just Eat Takeaway bought Grubhub for $7.3 billion in June. Grubhub declined to comment, citing the the pending litigation.

Uber's Eats business generated $1.45 billion in revenue, up 125% from a year ago as restaurants relied on Uber for delivery and the trend of people ordering in instead of dining out during the pandemic continued.

After filing earlier this year, DoorDash dropped its public S-1 filing this morning, bringing clarity to its numbers and moving it closer to a public debut that should happen before the end of the year.

DoorDash is a heavily-backed company, with Crunchbase reporting that the food-delivery giant has accessed around $2.5 billion in capital during its life, most recently in a $400 million round this June. At the time, DoorDash was valued at a towering $16 billion, post-money, giving the company big valuation shoes to fill when it prices its IPO, and begins to trade.

And DoorDash’s operations have flipped into the cash-generating territory, with the company reporting operating cash flow of $315 million during the first three quarters of 2020, up from -$308 million in the same period of 2019.
Overall I am impressed at first blush. The company is bigger, growing more quickly, and losing less money than I expected.

But perhaps defending that $16 billion valuation won’t be as hard as we might have guessed before getting our hands on the numbers.

The goal for customers is to increase convenience while preserving price expectations. For local businesses, there’s a possibility that some light prodding of the customer while they’re hungry and uninterested in leaving their homes will lead to more business. And for DoorDash, this move is another step toward making the app the ever-coveted “one-stop-shop” for all things delivery.

This new feature is available with 7-Eleven, Walgreens, Wawa, QuickChek, the Ice Cream Shop and DashMart, a DoorDash-owned convenience and grocery store. DoorDash is also piloting the ability to partner local restaurants with DoubleDash in several markets like Los Angeles, Denver and Portland, so if you want to start with sushi and end with a chocolate torte, it’ll be just a little bit cheaper and easier to do so.

Delivery company Postmates will pay nearly $1 million to fund back wages and inadequate contributions to the City of Seattle’s mandated paid sick leave program in a settlement reached with the Office of Labor Standards.

The settlement, under the Paid Sick and Safe Time for Gig Workers Ordinance, covers 1,646 workers and includes $949,815.49 in back wages, interest, and civil penalties for those workers, along with an additional $22,260.40 fine.
The city’s labor standards office began its investigation last fall after numerous workers — who had been working long hours during the pandemic delivery surge — complained that Postmates wasn’t paying the required sick leave nor notifying those same workers about how much paid-leave money was available to them.

Seattle had opened its investigation into the food delivery service before it was purchased by Uber in December 2020.

An Uber spokesman said the company was happy to put the matter to rest.

“While these issues arose before our purchase of Postmates was finalized, we appreciate the Office of Labor Standards’ close coordination with us to correct any outstanding issues,” said Zahid Arab, public affairs manager for Uber, said in a statement.

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is looking into a recent partnership between Uber and grocery delivery service Gopuff, according to a new report from The Information. Gopuff agreed to list its collection of grocery and liquor store items on Uber Eats in May, expanding Uber’s delivery abilities to an even greater degree as it competes with other companies like DoorDash and Instacart.

The FTC is concerned that the deal “could hamper competition in online sale and delivery of alcohol and convenience-store items,” according to The Information. Gopuff’s been growing on its own recently, acquiring the BevMo liquor store chain to use as stores and delivery centers, almost like Amazon warehouses for alcohol.

The FTC is reportedly also looking in to Uber’s recent acquisition of Drizly, an alcohol delivery service that Uber intends to fold into its Uber Eats app.
