Well, I can say that moments ago I needed to extract an ISO file, and 7-Zip kept saying it wasn't possible to extract it. Winzip, on the other hand, was able to extract it. I use 7-Zip 99% of my time, because it's free, but sometimes free won't be enough... and you got to go the trial way.
I installed 7-Zip a few months ago to try it, even though i still have it installed i no longer use it. I'm fine with WinRar trialware.
Yes, I do use 7-Zip. It's an open source application and free of charge. The most important thing is that it works for me. Never've had a problem.
Extracting To Original Folder Path OK 7-Zip gurus. I have a question for you. I have been messing around with 7-Zip lately, but when I extract an archive, 7-Zip creates an extra folder by the name of whatever the archive name is. How do I stop it from creating that extra folder name by default? I simple want it to default to the same, original folder path as it was before it was zipped. I know you can turn this setting on or off in WinRAR, but I can't see how to do it in 7-Zip.
Re: Extracting To Original Folder Path Well, the way I always do it is by right-clicking the file to bring up the context menu. From there you can choose to extract to a new folder, a folder with the same name as the file, or the same folder.

7-zip is too slow! Check out FreeArc: www.freearc.org It's lightning fast and achieves a lot more compression compared to 7-zip and WinRAR. Greetings D.
Question regarding 7-Zip. If I have a 250MB antivirus installer on my desktop, can 7-Zip compress it enough that I could email it to my dad? And if so, will it compress it in a format that he can extract it from within Windows as he doesn't have any Zip type software installed? Thanks in advance!
That's completely dependent on the file. Some files can be compressed quite a lot and some benefit very little.
Probably not if it's an installer. Most installers are already compressed - often using the same algorithm as 7zip.

Yes I use 7-Zip. Running linux here so FOSS is the way I go It runs great and does what I need. Never saw why one would pay for WinRar.
Speedtested it just after reading this poll and winrar which I always use and have no quarrels with is faster so the answer was and will stay no.
