Have to agree. Scanning the system with an AV is pointless on a non rooted phone as the AV can only scan so far into the OS due to restrictions. Much like app container in windows, your apps running on Android are isolated via sandbox as well. This said, I do use an AV on my non rooted phone, mainly for it's app advisor that alerts you to potential risks before downloading an app, such as privacy risks, unusual behavior, high battery or data usage. I also utilize a VPN for public hotspots when needed.
