Do we reconcile the permissions against functionality? Do we even bother reading the permissions? Unfortunately, the answer is probably a ‘no’, or at best it may be a ‘sometimes’.

App permissions are complex, and it is not always obvious why an app may require a permission. And in reverse, it’s sometimes abundantly clear that an app probably does not need a permission. Take, for example, a battery monitoring app: does it need access to my precise location or the ability to create new accounts? Probably not.

The category of apps that are typically at the forefront of abusing permissions are flashlight apps that request contact data and microphone access to name a few. Does the flashlight app want to listen to me and know all my friends? The answer is no, but there are plenty of companies to sell this data point to.
And even if the collection is out of context, we need to decide whether the service the app provides us equals the value of the data collected.

By default, apps on your phone have very limited permissions. To gain access to most of your data — and potentially dangerous Android features — they need your explicit consent. Android does that for security reasons; if permissions have potential for abuse, it’s better if an app doesn’t have them by default.

Apps actually need some permissions to do their jobs. For example, AR games really do require access to the camera.

For this post, we’re using the names of permissions and their paths in the “clean” Android 10. In other versions and on devices from some vendors, they may differ slightly.

Don’t give games more than they need
Android offers lots more permissions. Here, we’ve just covered those that must never be given to games under any circumstances.

When it comes to device security, you can never be too cautious. If some three-in-a-row game wants access to your camera or microphone, just say no. And if a game really does need a permission to work, you can always issue it later.

Well, normal apps don't need all permissions. If you're running app like TeamViewer (eg. remote control app) than yes, probably almost all permissions would be needed. But in common situations no. New Android implemented these https://developer.android.com/preview/privacy/permissions:

* one time permissions - https://developer.android.com/preview/privacy/permissions#one-time
* auto-reset permissions from unused apps - https://developer.android.com/preview/privacy/permissions#auto-reset
