With 8K displays in the pipeline and Apple's 6K Pro Display XDR on its way, the DisplayPort standard was in need of an update. Today, the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) addressed the demand for increased bandwidth and revealed DisplayPort 2.0.

It's the standard's first major update since 2016, and it will provide up to a threefold increase in bandwidth over the previous version. It will support 8K monitors, higher refresh rates, HDR support at higher resolutions and improved support for multiple display set-ups. It could also give AR and VR displays a boost.

The new standard is capable of delivering a maximum payload of 77.37 Gbps, nearly triple the 25.92 Gbps that version 1.4 delivered. As a result, DisplayPort 2.0 is the first standard to support 8K resolution at 60 Hz refresh rate with full-color 4:4:4 resolution.
According to VESA, the first DisplayPort 2.0 products are expected to appear on the market by late 2020.

VESA today announced that it has released DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0, paving the way for future USB4 devices to support DisplayPort 2.0.

Announced in June 2019, DisplayPort 2.0 has a max effective bandwidth of 77.4 Gbps, nearly triple that of DisplayPort 1.4. The new standard enables support for displays with up to 16K resolution, higher refresh rates, HDR support at higher resolutions, improved support for multiple display configurations, and more.
VESA expects the first products incorporating DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0 to appear on the market in 2021.

DisplayPort Alt Mode version 2.0 enables all of the latest capabilities of DisplayPort through the USB Type-C connector, including beyond-8K resolution and higher refresh rates, along with USB data delivery
DisplayPort 2.0, which was introduced in June 2019, provides up to a 3X increase in data bandwidth performance compared to the previous version of DisplayPort, as well as new capabilities to address future performance requirements of displays.
With the release of DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0, all of these high-performance video capabilities are now available to the USB ecosystem.
