BTW, you can see the content offered on the first link. I must say I'm not impressed, you really need to be into this Disney stuff. Of course they do offer a couple of classics (see IMDB links), but that's about it. I think people will probably combine Disney+ with Netflix, especially if they have kids.

You may have caught word a couple of months back of a limited-time, 3-year, discounted Disney+ subscription that shook out to about $4 per month, or roughly the cost of a cup of coffee.

The Disney+ deal, which was reported by the Orlando Sentinel, will knock about $40 off a three-year subscription that would normally put you out $210 (at the annual rate of $70). Put another way, the discount essentially means you’d be paying $170 for three years of the service, or just under $5 per month [...]
It’s worth noting that like the previous deal, this offer doesn’t include Hulu and ESPN+, which will be included in a Disney+ bundle for $13 when the service launches on Nov. 12.

After 11 years, Disney is pulling the plug on Disney Family Movies On Demand — with the service’s shutdown coming just days before the launch of the Mouse House’s Disney Plus.

Disney Family Movies, which cost between $5-$10 per month, has been available via pay-TV providers in the U.S., including Comcast Xfinity, Charter Communications, Verizon Fios, Cox Communications, Altice USA’s Optimum and AT&T’s U-verse.
As of Oct. 31, 2019, Disney Family Movies will no longer be available, according to a notice on Comcast’s site.
Disney Family Movies, first launched in 2008, offered a rotating selection of about a dozen feature-length films each month along with shorts, featurettes and other bonus content — all without ads.

Linux users who plan to subscribe to Disney's Disney+ video streaming service may have a rude awakening when they are greeted with Error Code 83 when trying to play any TV show or movie offered by Disney+ on Linux devices.

Fedora Linux package maintainer Hans De Goede from the Netherlands decided to try out Disney+ as the service launched recently in some regions including in the Netherlands. Interested users can sign up for a free trial to test the service.
De Goede noticed that Disney+ would not work in any of the web browsers that he tried on systems running Fedora Linux. he tried Firefox and Chrome, and both times Disney+ threw the error "error code 83".
Disney+ Support was not able to assist de Goede.

A user on the Dutch site Tweakers dug deeper and uncovered the response code that the site returned when a device or browser was used that could not be used to play streams. According to the information, error code 83 means that the platform verification status is incompatible with the security level. [...] Disney uses the DRM solution Widevine to protect its streams from unauthorized activity.

It appears that Disney set Widevine to a more restrictive level than its competitors. The decision affects Disney+ on Linux devices and on other devices that don't support the selected Widevine security standard.

But as long as somebody remains a subscriber to Disney Plus, any titles they've downloaded free on the Disney Plus app will remain to watch offline, no matter what happens to their availability to stream directly, Disney CEO Bob Iger said Tuesday, speaking at Vanity Fair's New Establishment Summit.

It's not the perfect solution, but it may nudge some people to get -- and keep -- that annual subscription, even in future years if Disney ever raises the prices.

Update 11:30AM ET: It seems that Iger's statements have caused some confusion. While he seemed to be suggesting that any videos you downloaded from Disney+ would continue to be available as long as you were a subscriber, regardless of changes in licensing or things going back in the "vault" so to speak, that's not necessarily the case.
A Disney spokesperson clarified to The Verge that, if a movie or show leaves the Disney+ platform, then it will no longer be available as a download. To give you the full context of Iger's statement, we've included a transcript below.

Disney’s new streaming service, Disney+, doesn’t launch until mid-November, but it may have already signed up more than a million customers in the U.S., according to new data from analytics firm Jumpshot, out this week. The firm, which gathers data from a panel of online consumers to gain insights, is not the only one forecasting a promising start for the upcoming streaming service.

In the case of the Disney+ data, Jumpshot tracked the number of visits to a sign-up page, then how many users followed through to purchase. It uses a statistical calibration from the panel to represent the U.S. internet population at large.
Jumpshot is also among the first to gather insights about the makeup of the early Disney+ subscriber base.

However, Jumpshot data is based on tracking consumer activity, not on polls.
That said, other studies have also confirmed there’s strong interest in Disney+ — stronger, in fact, than some other soon-to-launch rival streamers.
Notably, Disney+ wasn’t only appealing to families with children, the study also found.

Disney+ will be available on Amazon Fire TV devices for the November 12th launch after all, according to The Wall Street Journal, following a WSJ report last month that said the streaming service may not be available on Amazon products due to a disagreement over advertising.

CEO Bob Iger announced the news on Disney’s fourth quarter earnings call, alongside news that Disney+ will also be available on LG and Samsung smart TVs. “We’re pleased to announce partnerships with Amazon Fire [TV], LG, and Samsung devices.”
The Disney+ app on Fire TV will also tie into Amazon’s universal search feature, meaning that you’ll be able to request specific shows through Alexa [...]

Per the WSJ’s original report, the fight over Disney+ on Fire TV was due to a dispute over advertising rights in Disney’s apps, including those for ABC, ESPN, and the Disney Channel.
Whatever the terms, though, having Amazon on board is a big win for Disney heading into the launch of Disney+ on November 12th.

Apparently their existing Netflix contract means some properties that will leave Netflix will return to Netflix again in 2026.

The major streaming services—both old and new—all have different catalogs, pricing, and strategies. While all services seek viewers’ time and attention, in other respects they are different beasts.

Take Disney+. Disney’s strong suit is kids, family, and its popular Marvel and Star Wars content. It has also invested in a few original series such as The Mandalorian, a Star Wars spin-off.
But unlike Netflix, Disney+ doesn’t offer a full-service entertainment package.
In other words, neither Disney+ nor Apple TV+ is likely to be a “Netflix killer” anytime soon.

Another key difference between Netflix and services such as Disney+, Hulu, and Apple TV+ is the amount of global content in the former’s library.
Today, six out of every seven new Netflix subscribers live outside the U.S. The global market is essential for Netflix’s future growth.

In other words, the question of who will “win” the streaming war is more complicated than it appears.

Disney also wants viewers to pay to subscribe, but it has other ambitions too. Launching its own streaming service allows Disney to collect valuable data about who is watching and what they like.

Disney Plus is set to launch Tuesday, and die-hard Star Wars fans are counting down the minutes until they can start streaming The Mandalorian, the streaming service's big-budget spinoff taking place in a galaxy far, far away. But when exactly is the time to count down to?

Disney had at least two online countdown clocks ticking down to different hours recently, but the company said Sunday that Disney Plus is supposed to officially launch at 12:01 a.m. PT Tuesday.
However, people who start checking for the Disney app before 12:01 a.m. PT may see it pop up sooner because of quirks in different app stores.
After Tuesday's rollout, next up is a Nov. 19 launch in Australia and New Zealand. Much of Western Europe is getting the service March 31, with a wider international rollout to follow.

The company cited higher-than-expected demand as a factor, and now we have a rough estimate of the size of that demand — Disney has revealed that it signed up 10 million users since its Tuesday debut.
That’s a lot of subscribers in a very short period. To put it in perspective, Netflix recently reported 158 million subscribers, but that’s its total audience after many years of availability, across a broad global market.

But that’s still a very impressive debut for a brand new streaming offering, and a firm basis upon which Disney can grow its audience through future releases and marketing efforts.

The company says customers with an AirPlay 2-compatible SmartCast TV "may" be able to AirPlay Disney Plus content. This will work on 2019, 2018 and 2017 Vizio SmartCast TVs, and 2016 Vizio SmartCast UHD TVs, it said.

Disney+ has only launched in the US, Canada and the Netherlands for now, but it has global ambitions. It’s spreading to other countries over the next couple years, but China’s tight content regulations make it almost impossible to operate as a foreign media company in the country.

The problem is certainly not that people in China don’t want Disney+.
Disney previous launched a content service in China called DisneyLife in 2016, which was run by Alibaba. But that service only lasted five months before it was shut down at the “request of Chinese regulators,” according to The Wall Street Journal.
China has strict rules about what content people get to see in the country.

“It's really complicated to get into China and get a distributor license,” said Aladin Farré, a China-based producer and host of the China cultural industry podcast Middle Earth. “If you want to work in the culture business in China, you need to work with a Chinese company run by Chinese people.”

After some early struggles, Vizio is making progress on bringing Disney Plus to its line of SmartCast TVs. On Tuesday the TV maker announced that it will be pushing out an update in "early December" to its TVs that have Chromecast built-in to allow for streaming Disney Plus.

iOS owners who have Vizio TVs can already stream the new service on their televisions through AirPlay.
The new update, meanwhile, will enable Chromecasting of Disney Plus on TVs from as far back as 2016.

"We want consumers to know that when they purchase a VIZIO TV, it will keep its value for years to come," said Bill Baxter, Vizio's chief technology officer, in a statement.
