I used Disconnect couple months ago but dropped it because it seemed to use too much resources. But installed couple days ago and it is improved but I seriously hope they shade some light on the ETA of Secure search.

There are ongoing issues with site outages, main site, Blog, Forum, etc that need addressing now. The extension breaks disabling all functionality.

The workaround is to reload the extension - the assumes you have an offline copy of the XPI file when the main site is down.

I am in touch with the "Team" actively via Twitter. Someone seems to be asleep at the wheel as these things are known and not much effort, if any seems to be underway to fix them.

    More as I know more.

I wonder if they're running out of funding. I don't have too much issue with the extension on Firefox, but on Chrome things can get ugly. I've had it stall the browser a lot.

By the way guys, I don't want to derail the thread (and I can start a new one if requested), but is there anything at all like Disconnect/DNTMe for mobile devices (specifically tablets)? Ever since Google wiped the Play store of ad blockers and such, it's difficult to find any privacy tools. Firefox has ABP, but not much else. NoScript seems to be a dead project on Android too.

their only source of revenue seems to be donations.

a couple of days ago i decided to give it another try and send a 10$ donation.
that's when their websites started acting up.

it probably cost quite a bit to maintain their app and website.
i wonder what's the percentage of users who donate.

I've openly asked for changes and this is something that should be forthcoming for users to continue using the add-on.

    Re: Disconnect 3.3.0

The current version is 3.3.0 - I have asked among other things for changelogs as one does not know what version one is installing from the website.

    Version 3.3.0 is here:

I don't really understand the "content" category. I see more items listed under it that can easily be blocked without issue than I do legitimate items that can cause problems. That's down to personal opinion/experience though I guess. I do wonder though if there might be a "whitelist" in the future like ABP for extra funding.

some allowed content is just advertising sites.

so of course i am wondering on who's side they're on. :ninja:

The "Content" tab is supposed to be left at a default, disabled.
Though it's always good to experiment on pages with tons of third party ads like Venturebeat.

i am still wondering why stuff like Google AddSense is allowed.

unless it's Google plan to intertwine the content with the sludge so much that you can't get one without the other. :cautious:

looks to me like the Disconnect team want their cake and eat it too... :cautious:

personally, i find the whole thing suspect.
at least, Ghostery is (or seems to be) upfront about how they operate.

Google AdSense would be under the content tab, I would assume much of that is blocked but again, many smaller sites use much Google Advertising product.
You break that and you break pages. You can play with this to your liking.

some 'contents' is nothing but advertising.

tnx, but i will stick with Ghostery or NoScript.

at least with either of them, *i* get to decide what 'content' is. :ninja:

    Try this:
    https://f-droid.org/
Specific to Adaway by Dominic Shuermann (it's a HOSTS file job):
    https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=org.adaway
    https://github.com/dschuermann/ad-away
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2190070

I had AdAway on before google told the developers to go away, and since then AdAway has been working nicely for me, updating and all that. The version I have is 2.1.
