    Before I was directed to the above solution I was concerned about how I would resize the OS partition or restore an image. IFL didn't see the SSD, a Linux boot disk didn't see the SSD and a TBWinRE boot disk made in another computer didn't see the SSD. Booting IFL or a Linux boot disk in AHCI mode works. Booting a TBWinRE boot disk made in the Dell XPS works because it contains the needed AHCI drivers. This can be booted in RAID mode.

    All OK now. I've resized the OS partition smaller and created a Data partition. A restore is now possible.
