Dell updates popular XPS 13 laptop with 16:10 screen, IR camera

Today, the company announced the newest version of its popular XPS 13 laptop, an update to last year's model that is currently our favorite Windows ultrabook. Dell didn't change much about the XPS 13, though it did adjust the display aspect ratio to 16:10 and included an infrared camera for Windows Hello.

That first change makes a big difference in the overall look of the XPS 13 9300.
Now, Dell has expanded the display and shrunk all of its bezels to fit the new 16:10 panel, and it's a welcome improvement.
Otherwise, Dell focused on improving the stability of the XPS 13 with better materials and a slightly modified internal construction.

The updated Dell XPS 13 9300 will be available on January 7 starting at $999. Dell will also produce a Developer's Edition of the XPS 13, but its pricing and availability have not been released yet.

We spent this weekend going hands-on with a pair of 2020 model Dell XPS 13 laptops—one standard edition running Windows 10 Pro, and one Developer Edition running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. The XPS 13 is among Dell's most popular models, and for good reason—it's a sleek, solid-feeling laptop which usually has top-of-the-line hardware and good battery life.

Unfortunately, both of the XPS 13 models we tested had driver issues—particularly the Windows laptop, which has a Killer AX1650 Wi-Fi card.

Conclusions
We really wanted to love the XPS 13, but with driver-related screwiness on both Ubuntu and Windows, it was a difficult device to love. The choice of the Killer AX1650 Wi-Fi card over the plain-vanilla Intel AX200 was a poor one for the market.
With integrated graphics only, we don't see the XPS 13 as being anybody's first choice of "gamer elite" laptop, and the more complex Killer driver and software stack is of dubious value, even when it does work right.

The laptop itself, physically, looks and feels great. The hinges are just the right stiffness, the screen is bright and clear, the keyboard feels very good for such a small, thin laptop, and its white backlighting looks good in the dark.

Dell has announced new refreshes to its XPS 13 and XPS 13 2-in-1. Both are powered by Intel’s 11th Gen Tiger Lake processors and will be available in the US and Canada on September 30th (and more countries in the coming weeks). The XPS 13 starts at $999; the 2-in-1 starts at $1,249. The new XPS was first teased onstage at Intel’s Tiger Lake launch earlier this month.
The upgrades mostly look like spec bumps.

The 2-in-1 has also gotten a similar redesign to one that the early-2020 XPS received. What you’re most likely to notice is the new screen-to-body ratio.
Dell also announced a “developer edition” of the XPS 13. It’s a Linux-based device and the first laptop to come preloaded with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. Dell is also offering a free Ubuntu 20.04 LTS download to anyone who owns an XPS 13 and wants to switch their system over, regardless of whether they have a developer edition.

Dell says the entire XPS 2020 line will arrive in “sustainably sourced” packaging that includes recycled, ocean-bound plastics.
